Hi Phillip,
You will really enjoy searching for your ancestors. Let me see if I can
condense my family. It is rather a large Tavares family but not
necessairly with the Tavares name.
Grandfather Manuel Bento Tavares (1876 Lagoa, Azores)
Uncle Joseph Luis Tavares (1896 Hilo Hawaii)
Joseph's sons are Joseph Jr., Edward, Donald.
Uncle Sebastian (1901 Maui)
Sebastian's son is Raymond Anthony
Uncle Alfred (1904 Maui)
Alfred's son Earl Stephen
Uncle Manuel (Manny 1907 Maui)
Manny's son
Ahh, Etta, that Silva name is so hard to "connect". I have Silva on both
sides, one from Madeira and the other from the Azores...neither are related!
Like the Smith's!
Good luck. Maxine

Aloha everyone!
Is anyone willing to do some random acts of genealogical kindness? I would very much appreciate some look-ups on the 1900 and 1910 Hawaii censuses (or is that censi???). I can provide the exact names, locations, and even the particular enumeration districts. I am in Indiana, and our state library does not have the Hawaii census. I would happily return the favor for any of you who have family connections to Indiana.

Hi Beverly,
Not me personally most probably, but one of the 2 or 3 hundred other
subscribers just might have something you need. That is how a mailing list
works, you post your own info and queries (what you are trying to find out)
and then every subscriber sees them. Those with an answer will respond,
and we all help each other that way. It is often the very best source of
genealogical and historical information.
Good luck,
Kevin Fraley

Hi Etta,
Have one person by the name of Winona Kehaulani Miner Tavares and one by
Anson Rego. Don't know who Winona was married to in order to get the name
of Tavares. Anson Rego married into the Cockett family. He is from O'ahu.

I would start with the LDS Family History Center in your area. The Mormon
church has microfilms of all deaths in the State of Hawaii for that year .
This would be the first step in acertaining if a death certificate is on
file with the Department of Health. The next step would be to write to the
Department of Health in Honolulu for a certified copy. Since there is a fee
involved in obtaining a certified copy, I prefer to find out if there is one
first as many records were destroyed.

I am trying to find some basic history of Schofield Barracks. I would like
to know when it was built and for what purpose. I have tried many of the
military sites and search engines but can only come up with directions and
current data. I appreciate any assistance.

Hi Maxine,
Isn't that so true. I have found that sometimes long shots work.
By the way, my great grandfather John Silva Barros from Madeira married
Maria Silva from Faial. So I too have Silva's and Silva's (not
related). This Silva family was from Kona. After getting married the
future generations went by the Barros.
If anyone ties the Silva and the Barros together I have hit pay dirt.
You just never know.
We will cross our fingers.
