Can anyone tell me if Hawaii has a State Archives? If so do they have a
Friends of the Hawaii State Archives group? What is the time difference?
Thanks,
Nancy

Thank you everyone for your input!!! I hope something
turns up in the far West, because I don't have any
other information to offer. However, in regards to
John Hyde's query, I can only say that TUI MANU'A
(1650s-1700s) had a son/daughter by the name of
VAIOLUPE, the name at the top of our family tree. I
hope the possibility of the two Samoan brothers in
Hawai'i digs up something! Oh, and please send any
correspondence now to : seraphim@clear.net.nz
It's just easier for me to read emails in this

My name is Seraphim and I live in New Zealand. As far
as my Hawai'ian heritage goes, all I know is my father
is a direct descendant of Kamehameha, who apparently
(according to my father's family) is ancestor to the
last Tui Manu'a of Samoa (time approximately being
18th century). My family are Samoan - born & bred,
but the other side of my father's family are more
closely linked to the Hawai'ian side. One of my
father's cousins is called Kame'ame'a...the Samoan

Seraphim,
I hope you don't think I was being rude or callous, that wasn't my
intention. Your post strongly reminded me of the stories my own mother told
me and my siblings when we were small, that "Kamehameha the Great is your
GGGGG-Grandfather". The research I conducted as an adult proved her to be
wrong, although a Hawai'ian chieftain, Kaanaana, and the King of Kauai,
Keawemauhili, did turn up with documentation. Both may be cousins to
Kamehameha (or Tamehameha, as he called himself, using the old

Talofa!!! Thank you for your willingness to help &
your prompt replies! I'm afraid that being so far on
this side of the world, I do not know much about
Hawai'ian culture. But I like to think we all share
a great Pacific Island heritage. After reading what
you said about the "many claims", I am now not so sure
if my family are 'direct descendants' of Kamehameha.
I just remember hearing it as a child, whenever my
Uncle's (uncommon) name came up & people asked what
the origin was. Anyway, on your advic
Seraphim,
That ancestry is a popular claim, however, difficult to prove and highly
unlikely. Kamahameha's royal descendency was a dead end, so there cannot be
a DIRECT descendency through the established royal line. The line ended
without further issue, which is why the Hawai'ians elected their last King.
That leaves only the possibility of descendency through one of Kamehameha's
other mates, and those lines are not documented well, if indeed, at all.
Good luck in your journeys, though.
