Thanks for that Michael,
What then do you to cope with the 'difficult cases'?
In our day we just chalked them off, and put 'no knowledge' on the Board's
file!!
Happy Days, and we never knew it at the time!

Not sure if these codes are still extant. The plaques are hardwood with a coloured metal portcullis and the words HM Customs and Excise on either side of the crown. They will also add an inscription plate if requires.

Hi
I'm currently scanning and uploading to the site copies of the Customs
Journal contributed by Hywel Davies. On page 121 of the May 1968 edition
there is a reference to the Waterguard Controlling Grade Association:

the above Association to Mr Tom Hill. Our thanks are extended to the former
for his co-operation with ourselves in the past and we hope that the

I think in practice that's exactly what most old hands will still do.
Though I think in a few years time? Well I think my original answer will happen.
I hope to be out by the time that happens. But who knows?
Will I ever think of UKBA as good old days? NO don't think so.

Trevor,
I believe Jack Heath died a couple of years ago and my Dad's memory isn't
all it was, but I'll ask him if he can recall anything when I see him later
this week.
Best regards, as ever,
Steve.

To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting!
As an aside to the plaque question, does anybody know if this new Border
thingy will have any Revenue protection role, and if we no longer have
Customs Officers what then do we have?
I always knew it was a bad thing to get rid of the chalk!

Does anyone have an address, e-mail address or telephone number for Mike Summers who worked at Dover late '60s, later at Southampton and again at Dover? If so, can you forward the contact details off list to me at chezdavies92@hotmail.com?
Thanks

Tony.
You ask a good question there. Um I don't think they have looked that far ahead. But I think we would have to take advice from HM R&C. (If we can find anyone that would know.)
As most of the Officers would be transferred to UKBA and as we are agents. We could not possibly make the decision to chalk it off.
Yes they were happy days.

Trevor,
My Dad recalls taking over secretariat from Jack Heath but not much else, as
I suspected. He confirmed that the Association was only open to Waterguard
managers above the grade of CPO. i.e. Inspector/Assistant Waterguard
Superintendent, Chief Inspector/Waterguard Superintendent, Higher Waterguard
Superintendent, Inspector General etc. He believes that there were only about 30 such
qualifying staff at any one time but isn't sure of this. He thinks it was
merged with the Landing Office
As a very amateur player on the internet, I've been looking around the
Waterguard website (s), and came across some of last year's discussions as
to who the last APO was. I think that my money would be on Jack Ashton,
and I was sorry to hear that he had passed on a few years ago. However, the
last APO to join the Preventive Band of Brothers (c.1969), as the "Green
Book" will confirm, was Bob McSmythurs, who will be 60 years old this year.
Bob would have been promoted in the normal way, but after the 1971
Hi Anne
Please see the attachment which may (or may not!!) assist.
When I was in Anglia Intelligence we produced these wooden plaques, which
although were customised to be from "Anglia Intelligence", were based around
the HMC&E Portcullis on a blue background. They were bought from the firm
suggested by Neil Bailey, Military Marketing although I think they may have
now ceased trading.
If it helps I am more than happy to give you the plaque and will be happy to
put it in the post.
Best wishes
Geo

Greetings,
Jack Heath was a PO in London Port in 1958, and was at the time secretary
of the Preventive Staff Association. I think he went to East Anglia on

Did the PSA represent the CPO grade or was it just the APO/PO grades? The
CPO's might have been part of the Controlling grades, but it did represent
the AWS's and above.
I can recall working with Jack at Victoria station as a sprog APO doing
