Mari, As I understand it, the weighted silk can turn brittle and flakes off in square pieces or will simply deteriorate and collect as dust. Such a shame efforts weren't begun long ago to prevent the flags from suffering so much damage, but Iowa is far from being alone in that oversight. Hard to believe that over 100 years lapsed between the time the flags were stored away in the late 1800s, and then were brought out again. Sue > Silk! I just learned something new! 7. [IA-CIVIL-WAR] CW POWs [1]
Hi everybody, I've got some questions re: southern prisons and Andersonville POWs. Addison H. Sanders was a Colonel with the 16th Iowa. He and his men were captured at Atlanta on July 22, 1864. The enlisted men were taken to Andersonville but the officers were imprisoned elsewhere. Where might these officers have been taken? Was it common for only the enlisted men to go to Andersonville, or was this a fluke? Elaine

Yes, Jeanne, Captain Rhodabeck of Vinton did survive the war, but I was unable to find anything additional on him in what Vinton records I have on hand. Upon his discharge Jan. 28, 1865, he was replaced as Captain by William C. Rowland, an Ohioan residing in Stacyville (it was also called Stacyville Junction but I don't know when). He was young, 21 years old, when he enlisted as a Second Sergeant on July 7, 1862. He too was wounded on Jan. 8, 1863, in the same action in which Capt. Van Metre was mo

Sherry, Thank you for your kind words. I enjoy sharing what little information I do have, and hope that some of it proves helpful. Is there any particular regiment you're interested in? I seem to have a little something on most regiments, and most Western battles. Sue > Hi Sue...I just want to thank you for your time and > effort in posting this information. Steve, I'd love to have that. I am developing a Civil War message board on MSN and because I had an ancestor die in one of those prisons, I have a special board on prisons. I'll post your list there. Thanks! Sharon http://groups.msn.com/OurCivilWarAncestors

The Vinton Eagle Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa Wed., July 1, 1863 Letter from Phineas Win. Springfield, Mo. June 13th, 1863. Friend Hanford.--Having seen letters from different regiments, (or members of other regiments) in your paper, I thought perhaps a few lines from the 18th Iowa Regiment now in service at this post, might be interesting to some of your readers and especially to those who have relatives here. This regiment has been doing garrison duty at this place for the past six months.--The he

The 22nd was indeed prominent in the action on 22 May. It was the sole federal unit to break the Confederate line (men of Cos. B, D, H, and I), entering the earthworks briefly and contesting a portion of the "Railroad Redoubt" for several hours before having to fall back after a counterattack by Waul's Texas Legion. (Allen Cloud, shown as wounded and taken prisoner in the list below, is one of the 18 or so men of the 22nd credited with entering the Redoubt.) The 22nd suffered over 70% casualties in the att
16. [IA-CIVIL-WAR] V. Eagle, Aug. 6, 1862, Poem for John Gaston [1]
Sometime last year I posted an article detailing the chain of command involved in granting or denying a soldier a medical discharge. Below is a poem I came across that perhaps expresses even better than that article the frustration and anger of the soldier in awaiting a disability discharge that might not come or might come too late, as it did for John Gaston. The poet does not mince words and places blame where he feels it belongs, whether fairly or not. The Vinton Eagle Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa W

Cathy, Thank you for this! I knew that the CW ancestors we have were put through some mighty hardships fighting for "the cause", but until I received my GGrandfather's pension file, I really hadn't a clue as to how devastating it was for some of them. My mother, the youngest granddaughter, wanted to know more about her grandfather. So, I've been digging for the last couple years to give her that knowledge before she passes on. Well, now mom is having age-related dementia problems, but at least I g

Thanks very much, Steve. I appreciate the information. I always wondered in what prison/s Addison might have been incarcerated. He came home from the war with typhoid fever, which he was said to have contracted due to his weakened state after spending time as a POW. His health was never the same. He came home emaciated and terribly weak, however he did recover. Thanks again, Elaine ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Kiner" To: Sent: Thursday,
22. Re: [IA-CIVIL-WAR] William H. Dorman (Lisper and Bigamist??) [1]
Cathy, There are actually three listings for William Dorman in the Roster, two of whom are no doubt the one man you're looking for. They are separate listings because the compiler apparently saw them as two different men due to the difference in their residences at the time of enlistment. Serving in different regiments didn't automatically place them on separate lists. The third Wm. Dorman listed is a man born in KY. Here are the two listings for your Wm. Dorman: Company E, 2nd Iowa Infantry: Wil

Me too, me too! I think you deserve the cyber ink on this list applauding you. I posted some of those stories on a message board and it made the day of a young Iowan who loves the Civil War, loves Iowa, and gets irked that so much is written about the war in the east, and little about what went on out west.
