Donna, There are two different families in the Waukon and surrounding area who use the surname of 'HAAS.' One group is from Germany and a few of the others are Norwegian . You should be able to figure out which by the first names. In the case of Catherine, there are only 342 out of a population of slightly more than four million. BTW, there are 31 people with Haas as their surname currently in Norway. Your W.O.Bell could have lived just across the river...or been born in Clayton Co. and then moved over there. (back there). Susan, I don't have any idea what first names are Norwegian, or which were German. Maybe you have a list to share? I see that Catherine is a German name, what others do you think are? Catherine is listed in an online database for cemeteries as Catherine Haas Howes. Her ggrandaughter, age 88, does not remember seeing an "s" after their name, and has been to the plot many times.
