1. West Union Churches [1]
Tom and list, The Catholic church in West Union is Holy Name Catholic Church. The current Lutheran church is Zion Lutheran. I'm not familiar with a United Bretheran Church. At one time, there was another Lutheran church in West Union, but I don't recall the name of it at the moment. I'm going to be in West Union this weekend, I'll see what I can find out. 2. GILBERT, Betsey A. Elgin, IA [1]
Searching for ancestry of Betsey A. GILBERT, born February 10, 1862 in Elgin, Fayette Co., IA. Her parents were Iver (or Ivor) and possibly Annie (last name unknown) GILBERT who, at least Iver, immigrated from Norway. Betsey's siblings were (Americanized names); Olaf, Gilbert, Henry, Barbara, and Rachel. Betsey and I'm assuming the entire family moved to Wisconsin before 1882 (Betsey married Tollef BRATTLIE on March 12, 1882 in Ridgeway, Iowa Co., WI). Any information on any of Betsey's siblings, pare

6. Re Catholic in West Union [1]
I have Catholic families in my West Union families, but they apparently went over the county line to the Church of Seven Dolors, in Festina, Winneshiek Co. This was primarily a German Catholic congregation, but my Irish ancestors are also buried there. I found tombstones records for it on Ancestry.com under 'Tombstone Records of Winneshiek Co.'. Good luck! Stacey Fitting

My 2nd great grandfather, Milton M. Taylor was a pastor, and I've been told that the group he belonged to was United Brethren. The census puts him in Center Twp, Fayette County from 1885-1895. Would that be West Union? So I'm also interested in learning more about the churches of West Union. Phyllis Stengl -----Original Message----- From: Stacy N. 8. Christian BERGER [1]
Interested in information on Christian BERGER listed in the 1870 Pleasant Valley Twp. census living with Jacob LEHMANN (age 64) and his daughter, Catherine (age 32). Christian BERGER immigrated in 1856; his wife dying at sea during the course of the voyage. Christian and family first stopped in Fayette Co. A Winona Co., MN bio sketch of Christian's daughter, Anna Elizabeth, indicates they lived with an uncle in Fayette Co. - is that Jacob LEHMANN? In 1874, Christian BERGER moved to Winona Co., MN

Hi, Phyllis, The Fayette County, Iowa USGenWeb page is wonderful! I don't promise that you will find the United Brethren church you are looking for, but I do promise that you will find some excellent sources there. Linnie Howell is the "person in charge" of that site, and she does an excellent job. It's site can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iafayett/ Good luck, Doris A. 11. Re: West Union church records: United Brethren [1]
That was about the time of the split of the first American denomination - United Brethren Church, so depending on which branch they stuck with and what time researching, it's the loose combination of Mennonite and Reformed churches, "United Brethren in Christ"; and then the other branch eventually merged with Evangelical, which later merged with Methodist to form United Methodist. If looking for 1880s to 1900 time frame records, I'd start my search in nearby UB archives. Unfortunately, I don't find

The following information was taken from "History of West Union, Iowa, 1849-1974".
