Hello Vicki,
Section numbers are based on the Federal Township and Range system. More
information is available at
http://www.outfitters.com/genealogy/land/land.html
As you pointed out, Civil Township boundaries and the Township/Range
boundaries of the Township and Range system do not always match,
probably due to different points in time they were each created. I do
not know the exact historical explanation.
There's a little bit more information at the Harrison County Township
Map page to reflect some of
On the 1884 Atlas map of Jefferson Twp, I found 5 schools but I only know the
name of 3 of them.

Liberty School T79 S25 R42
Harmony School T79 S31 R42
Does anyone know the names of these 2 Schools?

Someone sent a query about the surname LEWIS in Harrison County but I can't
find the email to respond to them. Yesterday I was at Preparation Cemetery
and found these Lewis graves. All of these graves are at the front of the
cemetery & can be seen from the gate on the left side. There were Lewis
families in Harrison County with RR Moorhead addresses in the 1905 HC
Directory. I am sending this info to the Harrison County List in hopes the
person who inquired will find this response.

I was browsing through a webpage called "America's First Families" that is
about families that settled in the 1600's in America. I saw many, many
surnames that I have seen while doing Harrison County research. Does anyone
know if our Harrison County families are related to any of the families
listed on this webpage?
So far I have found 3 of my surnames on the webpage and I know the lineage
back to the person named. There is also an interesting section on fraudulent
genealogical lines. Thought I
Let me try this again, I found another school. On the 1884 Atlas map of
Jefferson Twp, I found 6 schools but I only know the name of 3 of them. I
also listed the school in S10 incorrectly as Secion 7.

Hello:
My gg-grandparents were Himelius & Priscilla (COFFIN) MENDENHALL.
After Priscilla was widowed, she lived with her daughter, Delphina
(Mendenhall) Williams & Family in Harrison County, IA with other
extended family members nearby.
Does anyone have any information about Priscilla (Coffin) Mendenhall as
she had other descendent's in Harrison County. IA, both MENDENHALLs and
MOOREs? In checking on a gravesite with HCGS, none was found; however,
with their checking marriage records, HCGS found a ma

Here are the some of the surnames that I saw on tombstones in Preparation
Cemetery, Monona County, IA. Preparation Cemetery is between Pisgah &
Moorhead, south of the Preparation Canyon Recreation Area. Many of these
surnames have ties to Harrison County and the LDS Church. There are other
names but this list is all I can remember from my visit. I got off
Interstate 29 at Little Sioux & took one of the Loess Hills Loops over to
Pisgah. This route was absolutely beautiful! I have no other infor
Dennis has added a new map to the Harrison County webpage. It shows the
T/S/R for all the townships! If you have the Township, Section & Range of
where your families lived, you can find it on the new map. Check it out if
you haven't seen it.

Hi Vicki,
My Porter family in Harrison Co go back to the early 1600's. What families are
you tracing? Where is the web site, America's first families that you mentioned?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Who knows how the sections in the different townships were numbered? What
method was used? I have the 1884 Atlas & have been working on Jefferson
Township when I noticed that Jefferson has 2 sets of the following section
numbers: 13, 14, 23, 24, 25, 26, 35 & 36. One set is on the east of the
twp & the other on the west.
When I check Calhoun twp to the west I see that Calhoun splits sections 14,
23, 26 & 35 with Jefferson. Calhoun twp doesn't even have a full set of
numbers it has sections 14-
