I was wondering if someone can do a lookup for me. In the Iowa census of
1856, for Maine Twp., see if John Wood is listed, along with Fred Staley who
was born in Canada.
I'm trying to search the roots of Fred Staley who lived in the vicinity of
Viola, Ia. and had a large family. Fred was a direct ancestor of mine and
is believed to have been born in Clyde, Ontario in mid-1840s. He was buried
in Cedar Knolls cemetery.

making fun of my maiden name, I should mention that it was a very good

I am researching the families of William VORNHOLT (b. 12/23/1829 in Prussia,
d. 9/23/1898 in Linn County, Iowa) married to Elizabeth Catherine HIEBER in
1860. Particularly interested in his relationship to Henry VORNHOLT married
to Sophia. (William and Henry are listed next to each other in the 1860 Linn
County census although last name is spelled WANHOLT.)
Also researching the families of Jan ANDRLE (b. 11/23/1837, d. 8/8/1910)

According to IALINN-D Digest V00 #73, "Ancestory.com" supposedly
put the book "Linn County, Iowa, History to 1878" online until 8-11-2000.
However, it doesn't show up on a search of their site. Anyone else have
this problem??

As I read these messages from everyone who lived in the Benton County
(Urbana, Vinton areas) and the neighboring Linn County (Cedar Rapids), in
the time frame of 1875, I can't help but wonder how many, or if any, of
these folks we all are looking for individually, were friends, neighbors,
etc... I don't know why...it just crossed my mind!

Yes, and some from Iowa. If anyone knows whether these people are British
or Czech Americanized surnames I would appreciate some help here. I am in
Virginia and not familiar with whether these might be or were Czech
communities.

Michael,
You have to allow for the fact that most people are just now winding down
from vacations and getting kids back to school. By tradition, ALL lists are
usually slow during the summer months and heavier during the fall and
winter, when people are homebound. I wouldn't give up so easily :-(

Thank you, Dave and Barbara. The spelling would come close to the

The online phonebook shows 56 Chickens in the USA. Not exactly a Chicken in
every pot, but ....

I just realized I didn't fully answer the question here. The Chicken
surname is not an uncommon British name and an English researcher has a
major website devoted to the Chicken surname. There are Quakers who settled
in the Midwest with the name and I believe there are early British settlers
in the southern states bearing the surname with major research being done on
the name there.

Cathie,
Yes, there a number persons on this list. There has not been as much
activity as much mail as earlier. The end of summer and the long holidy week
end may have curtailed some of the activity.
The surnames I am researching in Linn County are
Marshall and Kirkpatrick. My grandmother Mary Celestia Marshall daughter of
William Marshall b. 1815 in PA and Harriet Kirkpatrick wass born in Mt

Hi Dawn!
Thanks! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, these lists don't let you out til you tell them
you unsub...know what I mean? I've unsubbed from quite a few lists
recently because well...I belonged to a GENNORDIC -L because it may
contain info about stuff going on in Sweden. I work all day and play on
the 'puter and work on my lineage when I can or when I'm not tired so
even though I discovered some time ago that this GENNORDIC thing had
little or nothing to do with anything I wanted or needed, I just put up
