We now have settled on a website for my files from the 1880 History of Polk Co., Iowa. We have been on this site for several weeks with no problems.
http://members.home.net/polkgen/index.htm
The six files are in .txt format and represent about 700 pages from the 1000 page book. The remaining pages do not have much information on specific people and therefore are of less interest to genealogy researchers.
The files are:

I am looking for the death date and place of burial for Hargis/Hargus
Stewart or Steward. Hargus was born about 1812 in Kentucky. He married
Phebe Collins March 3, 1839 in Knox County, Illinois, and then moved his
family to Polk County, Iowa. It is believed he died before 1873, but I
have no proof of that. His wife, Phebe (possibly full-blooded Native
American) died in 1891 and is buried in the Woodland Cemetery in Des
Moines Twp., Polk Co., IA.

Hi,
My cousin was born in Polk County Iowa at Booth hospital on Dec 28, 1941.
The file is sealed. all we have to go on is the name of the hospital, date,
name of doctor, name of orphanage. He is going to the Polk County library
to search newspaper microfilm for births. The Polk county Geneological
Society is nearby.....my question.....what else can he look for??? I'm sure
many of you know how frustrating it is not to be allowed access to your own
files! He tried to get a judge to open the file and was
Hoping to find some remnants of the large Grossnickle family that lived in Avon. Searching for any info on Charles F., Harry E., John G., Boyd K., Valeria B., William Wilsher or Inza Jane Grossnickle. All were children of Francis and Mary Grossnickle. I know that Harry E. married an Estella Flack and they moved to MN. After a divorce Harry returned to the Avon area as did his brother Charles.
Thank you

P.S. Has anyone heard of a William H. WHITSON in the area?
Hello Polk,
Can somebody please tell me what Beaverdale is? Is it a township within Des Moines? A suburb? Where is a second-generation Swede and Lutheran who lived in Beaverdale supposed to be buried?

Are you aware of the Minn's Grocery Store in Valley Junction? One of
my family members worked in the store during WWI. Does it still
exists?.
Would appreciate some information about it.
Thank you.

Hi Everyone!
I just subscribed to this mailing list today. Recently I found out
that
my great grandfather was the son of Hoyt Sherman(brother of General
Sherman) who lived in Des Moines since 1848. Hoyt built a beautiful
mansion in 1877 which is now a museum.
My next step is verifying that my great grandfather, William E.
Sherman,
was indeed the son of Hoyt Sherman. Is anyone living in Des Moines a
descendant of Hoyt Sherman?
I would love to share information about my Shermans if anyone knows
Valley Junction used to be a little farming community west of Des Moines.
It is now a large community called West Des Moines! When I lived
with my grandmother in Des Moines during and after WWII and every summer
after that for quite a while, we used to drive there to get fresh produce.
I am not sure when it because West Des Moines, but I think it was
before I started college at Drake in 1961.
