Thank you Dick for the following information you posted in reply to my query

suggestions.
**** NOTE TO ALL: **** In the meantime, here is some important research
information for the rest of the list! Ancestry.com has just released the Iowa
State Census collection 1836 - 1925. It is a FREE Index, so is available

Hi Paul -
I tried playing with things further and got absolutely nowhere!
The only thing I can suggest is for you to do a complete search of the rest
of the children. Try to find them in other census records and look around
them for other records they may have left. In one of my peripheral family
trees, an 1850 census record can be found for a man, his wife, and a bunch of
kids. The next census, several of the children are living in the same area, but
the parents are gone. Most folks w
You need the local geneaology society. The Des Moines library does not keep
that information so I doubt the Davenport public library does. You can call
and ask them but for all the counties I have looked for ancestors I've used
the State Historical library, the local geneology society or gone to the
specific counties geneology societies.

I posted in Scott Co as family lore says they lived either there or Monroe Co in 1860. I'm taking a shot to see which. I cannot find them in an 1850 census even though I have listed that daughter Mary Ann was born in Schenectady, NY in 1841 and son James was baptised in 1851 in Schenectady. I have had some people search with no luck.
thanks,

I wonder if anyone knows of the James McLoughlin family living in Davenport, Iowa, in 1860. From the census:
James McLoughlin, 49, Laborer, Ireland
Mary, 45, Ireland
Elizabeth, 23, milliner, Ireland
Mary, 19, Ireland
I'm trying to find out if this is the same family who was in Providence, Rhode Island in 1850.
James McLaughlin, 40, Laborer, Ireland
Mary, 30 Ireland
Elizabeth, 15, Ireland
Francy (male) 12, Ireland
Mary 10, Ireland
There was quite a migration of Rhode Islanders to Davenport about th

I am guessing because of the date someone will have to see if it is on
microfilm either through Scott County or State Historical Building. I would check
Scott County's website and see if it says at what point they started
maintaining these records. Most counties started keeping official records in 1880.

Paul -
Would it be possible for you to post what you do have on these people? I've
found, in working with other researchers, that sometimes one of them will
see a clue that I may have missed, and vice versa.
So, you say you have Mary Ann born in NY in 1841. Do you have a census
record from that area in 1840? If so, what are the ages of the individuals in
the family? While we cannot tell from that census whether the persons in the
home are all related, it may give us a reference to see
