Cathy, Although it hints at it, the foreward into the index does not come right out and say that the numbers are page numbers of the census. It tells you where the page numbers are located on the census and explains the A and B differnce. The numbers are page numbers of the 1850 Iowa Van Buren County Census. I do not know of any place online that the actual 1850 census can be read. However the census microfilm is available to order and view at most any Public Library or any LDS Family History Center usua
