Hi,
On the census index for Van Buren-1850 these HILL families are listed. HILL 295A-295B-320B-321A-331B-337A-346A-362A. I am looking for a Cathrine HILL born 1849 in V.B. CO. Could anyone tell me if there is a place on line these can be found or what the #'s stand for? Page? Also On another site I found these names for 1850 Van Buren Co. and there are more than in the index for same year and place. Is anyone familiar with these HILL families? Hi. I've been a member of this list before, but it has been a while. My interest in Van Buren County stems from a great-great....grandfather Joseph R. Wescoatt. My line ends with Joseph R. Wescoatt b. Jan 1786, d. 10 May 1840 Keosauqua, Van Buren, Iowa. He married Sarah Metzger and had sons Riley and Jonas. I'm trying to connect Joseph with some of the Connecticut Westcott's but no luck so far. I can't seem to find anything on Joseph's past. I don't have access to census or land records though. Mayb

The State of Iowa issued that beginning in July, 1880, Death Records would
be kept. It was not, however, certained as to which person, or office, was
to be responsible for these records. Therefore, many deaths were not
recorded. I have read that it is estimated that 50% of Deaths are not
recorded between the years 1880 and 1920.
Good hunting.

Awhile back someone asked about the Spurgeon family.
Try this address: Harvey and Doris Spurgeon, Box 20A RR2, Keosauqua, Iowa

Their daughter, Elaine, says she thinks they have a family history.

Hello All,
I'm going to put out some bait here in hopes that someone will
find a name I can hook on to.
My family stopped in Van Buren County for about 17 years..beginning
about 1852 and ending circa 1869 when the head of the family migrated
on the Saunders county, NE.
Many important milestones took place in that period of time in Van Buren
County...and I am hoping some of your ancestors may have played a role.
Joseph and Mary [Perkins] FREEMAN migrated from Ohio into Iowa circa
1851 as my ancestor, Jo

I have been told that funeral homes keep records on individuals that have
died and they have handled the services. Does anyone know what the local
funeral home would have been for the area of Harrisburg twp/Bonaparte back in
the 1870's. Is it still around and if so how do I contact them about any

Thanks for any help.

Hey Kathy,
I attach a four generation list of "my" Petersons, starting out in New Jersey,

Note that some of the Peterson names have numbers with them. Those folk are my

Cathy,
Although it hints at it, the foreward into the index does not come right out
and say that the numbers are page numbers of the census. It tells you where
the page numbers are located on the census and explains the A and B
differnce. The numbers are page numbers of the 1850 Iowa Van Buren County
Census.
I do not know of any place online that the actual 1850 census can be read.
However the census microfilm is available to order and view at most any
