I wasn't aware of the record destruction for Stavanger emigration. No wonder
I couldn't find my grandfather or his brother.

Mathilda Mikkelsen on 24 Dec 1895 using the name Peder Pedersen. The 1900
census states he was a tailor living at 718 Humboldt St, enumeration
district 474 in ward 15, in a Chicago area called West town.
When he died on 27 Dec 1929 in the town of Matteson WI he is known as Peter
Peterson.

Perhaps you already have this, but here's your grandfather's baptism
record in the ministerial book for Forsand parish in Hxgsfjord, Rogaland:

The Stavanger emigrant protocols were destroyed by a fire in 1929. Some
records from around 1903 through 1925 have been reconstructed from other
sources and are available for searching in Digitalarkivet, along with
the normal protocols for 1925 through 1956.
