I live 30 minutes from Cairo and 20 minutes from Pulaski Co Court House.
I understand the mess but one thing we should all take note of Karima is
correct Cairo in the 70's had a population of 7000 + now 3000+ both counties
have small tax base and it keeps getting smaller.
2. Those folks who did know what is what at the courthouse are probably
retired or dead.
3. New Generations of County Clerks and new hires due to 2.

neighbors.

Good Morning Valerie and fellow list members,
I am more than ready to assist in this matter in any way possible. First we
need to find out what we are dealing with.
If this is a grant to come through a "governmental" entity then we could
contact the appropriate legislators, etc.
If this is a "State of Illinois" grant, we should contact the State Senator
for that area (I know who this is) and the State Representatives for
Alexander County and surrounding counties. We could also contact the

Looking for the death date for Isaac Collins. He would have died in the year
of 1889- bef Aug 1890 (my guess). I do not know if he served and died in the
war or if he was a farmer and died of natural causes. At the time of his
marriage to Sarah Cross, he was 39yrs old and she was 22yrs. I feel he may
have been married once before her.
Also his daughter died between 1890-1900. She was listed in the 1890 census
but I dont think she was in the 1900 census (she would be listed under her
step dad's na
Could an owner of this book please check the index and see if it contains:
Alexander ALLEN, Jefferson MARTIN & John H. PARKER.
It's a pricier book and want to know if these names are in there before I
purchase it. Cheapskate? No, Thrifty!

I recently (Aug. 16, 2001) visited Alexander Co courthouse. I would
like others to share there experiences. In the County Clerk's office
(MR, DC, and BC) I was charged $1.00/page for copies, if I remember
correctly some mentioned they were charged $.50/page. I also checked
out the Circuit Clerk's office (Probate records). I was told by the
folks in the office that they did not have a probate index for
records older than 1920. They gave me a key to a vault that was up
stairs. I found the room a m
Does anyone know from which agency the grant has been requested?

Hey folks..Sounds disturbing to say the least; but I've heard the same

contacting her; let me know and I'll send you her email address..By the way;
I understand Pulaski county is not much better...

This sounds like a really valuable resource! Is there anyone who might also
be able to look at Clifford's 'find'?
I would love to be able to check out my ERWIN / IRWIN wills through this set
of records. Has anyone local to the Courthouse any ideas? We need to ensure
that the records are maintained and people enabled to access them.

Can I ask a "newbie" question? I have never contacted Funeral homes before,
although I have been doing research for years - what kind of information do
they have and how helpful have you found them generally to be? I have been
desperately searching for the death and/or burial records for John P. Hall
(Judge J.P. Hall) he died between 1910 and 1920, his wife is listed as a
widow on the 1920 census still in the same place, leading me to believe he
probably did die there. However he is not listed for
Following Betty's success I am wondering if sks would be able to do a
similar look up for me please?
I am seeking a marriage for a John Erwin/Irwin to a second wife in 1860 to
1867 in or near Thebes.
Any help most gratefully received - particularly as I am researching from
England.
Thanks folks.

There are funeral homes in Cairo, also one in Tamms. There aren't any
cemeteries in Cairo, as all burial are either in Villa Ridge, Tamms, or Olive

Hi Nadeen,
I was just back there a few months ago. The courthouse is in Cairo on Hwy 37...I didn't get the exact address...but the town is so small you won't have any trouble finding the courthouse. It is about in the center of the town on the north side of the road. It's a relatively new two story building...not too big. The marriage and land records go back to about 1818. I don't remember about death and probate, but I think that they are much later.
Don't expect too much help from the people wo
I would think the first place would be the Alexander County Commissioners
when they meet bring up the subject of what they will or can do about the
problem also the alledged grant that is to be funded what are they going to
do with it.
Preserving the documents etc.
Before I started going to Springfield I would think that I would ask the
Alexander Co IL people what they can do about the problem.

Hi Clifford,
Your experience is pretty consistent with what the rest of us have found at
the courthouse. As for the amount they charge for copies...at first I was
told $1.00 per page, but when the girl saw how many copies I had made she
reduced the price to 50 cents per page. I still ended up paying them nearly
$40.
I was told by one of the clerks in the probate office that most of the
clerks are new because during the last election the clerks were replaced
along with the politician. Most of them real
Although my planned trip to Alexander County will not be as soon as next
week, I also would appreciate getting the same information that Nadeen has
requested about locating the vital records that she mentioned in the
Alexander County Courthouse. Could answers be posted to the list, please?
Families that I am researching in Cairo include the following surnames:
SAUP, ARTER, EICHENBERGER.
Thank you,

I was reeling unhappily when I read the emails about the condition of the
Alexander County Courthouse, pained for you who knew Cairo "when" and for
all family researchers--as well as selfishly unhappy for myself, who am just
now beginning to research my SAUP/ARTER/EICHENBERGER families, residents of
Cairo during the latter half of the 19th Century.
My question: is their any quasi-organized group, or organized person who
can put together a group of people who can begin making in-roads into
organizing the f
Dear Alexander List friends,
Firstly well done to Alexander County for making the Bid for funding in
respect of the vault materials!
As a (virtual) group I'm sure we can make the Alexander County Bid more
robust and more notable to the people who will decide on its relevance and
perhaps amount of $$$ given for this work.
May I suggest a letter from the list administrator (supported by as many of
us as possible) is sent to the Board/Charity/Department making the award?
Its not just getting the award but
I found on ILTrails a list of 1830 residence. I'm interested in:
MARTIN ~H.ALLEN ~JOHN
ALLEN ~ALL THE PARKERS.
My question is does ALEXANDER CO have a Goodspeed or County Book for a look
up on these names?
I'm researching; Alexander ALLEN, John PARKER, Jefferson MARTIN.
Alexander and Pulaski, Massac Counties.
Thank you,
