I knew I'd heard that name before...
>From Brink's "History of De Witt County, Illinois" (1882), page 294:
One of the peculiar pioneers, infact such as one as we sometimes read about
in "border life" novels, was Sylvanius Shurtleff, a native of Vermont. He
was a peculiar composition of genius and romance. He was of a restless,
roaming disposition, and had lived more of less with the Indians. Indeed,
he was initiated and became one of the tribe of the Pottowatomies in 1823.
He remained with them f
Does anyone have a copy of the 1830 census for Tazewell co. Illinois (which
part of became Dewitt) handy? I'm looking for the numbers on the James
Scott, Martin Scott, the John Scotts, William Scott, Thomas Glenn, and John
Vinson families. I can't find my copy anymore and it's not online anywhere.
Thanks!

Peggy BARTON is a holy terror in the neighborhood in which she lives,
and she has made life so unpleasant for the Wapellicans that there would
be a day of general thanksgiving if she would transfer herself and her
earthly possessions to some remote locality. Peggy has a neighbor who
is very nervous, and it is Peggy's delight to quietly surround the house
and fire a volley of brickbats at it. On Wednesday she armed herself
with a club almost as big as a fence rail

The biographies that follow were published in the Clinton
Weekly Register, Clinton, Illinois, Friday, April 14, l876, as
part of the national centennial celebration. Information was
solicited from the subjects themselves.
A copy of the paper was furnished by Phyllis Lynch.

I want to thank all of you for the prayers and best wishes
on the behalf of my sister.
She has improved by leaps and bounds in the last two days.
She may even be on the release list tomorrow. We all know
that it was prayer that helped as twice we were told she
would not make it through the night and she did. So I owe
each and everyone of you.
I will try to get going with my work on
De Witt shortly. I have a lot of catch-up but will get it
done asap.

Think Illinois has a GENWEB site that will post your obit for all to see
in years to come. Maybe someone on the WEB could come up with the

My Grandparents, Marion W. GROVES and Louisa JONES, got married in the house
of Samuel P. Glenn, in 1881. I don't know if they were related or why? It
was signed by a J.P., but GLENN did sign as a witness.

Some time ago, Earliene posted a message about sending old pictures of DeWitt County to the county. I have a new computer and have lost the message. I have an old picture which says "Swisher Neighborhood Ladies" and would like to see if anyone can identify the ladies in the picture. We also have other old photos. Can you please tell me again where she directed us to send copies of the pictures?
Thanks.

Dear List;
Please excuse my absence for the next few days. My sister
came for a visit and yesterday had a massive heart attack
and is currently in critical condition so I will be spending
my time at the hospital. You needn't respond to this
message. I know that all your prayers will be with us.
Thank You for being there,
Earliene
Thank all of you for your prayers and I will be gone for a
couple weeks so be patient and I will get the new
information posted as soon as I can.
I have to take my critically ill sister back to her home in
NH. She does need more prayers if you don't mind. Leaving
in an hour so take care of each other.

Don't be a grumbler. Some people contrive to get hold of the prickly
side of everything. To run against all the sharp corners and
disagreeable things. Half the strength spent in growling would often
set things aright. You may as well make up your mind to begin with that
no one ever found the world quite as he would like it; but you are to
take your part of the trouble and bear it bravely.
Hi everyone, I got this from another mailing list I am on and thought there might be someone out there who might find a ancestor they might be looking for. Here it is: http://theoldentimes.com/

Dear List;
Thank all of you for your prayers. My Sister started waking
up last night and spoke her first words. She isn't out of
the woods yet but we were grateful for the progress
yesterday. I was able to call her family in NH and they
could talk to her. We are sure the prayers are helping as
the Dr. gave us very little hope that she would ever
survive. You have my eternal gratitude.
