1. DAMRON/McCLAIN Connections [1]
We have established a close connection between our McCLAINs and the DAMRONs. Both families seem to be from NC via Ky and Tn and were early settlers in Gallatin Co, IL. Both families moved to Weakley Co, TN about 1823. Charles DAMRON was the executor of Charles McCLAIN's estate in 1846. There are several marriages to McCLAIN women noted in the DAMRON books. We just can't sort out which McCLAIN families they came from. If we can make these connections we can extend you our McCLAIN line back to 1711 in MD.
2. Holler if you know these names! [1]
Hello, I love old maps. I recently acquired one of the old 15' Equality topo maps. There are a number of hollow that run up the north side of the ridge of the Shawnee Hills that lies just south of the Gallatin county line in Hardin County. These valleys run up the hillside from the flood plain along Eagle Creek and its tributaries up the main east-west ridge that includes The Pounds, High Knob, and further west, Garden of the Gods. From east to west to the southwest corner of Gallatin County, they are nam

6. Old Slave House - update and meeting [1]
Hello, This is not really genealogical information, but something of historical interest to southeastern Illinois. There will be a public meeting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Southeastern Illinois College to determine and endorse a plan of action in an effort to get the Old Slave House reopened to the public. The state's timetable is now measured in years and the site is in danger of being mothballed like the Shawneetown Bank State Historic Site. However, there are alternatives. That's what Thursday's meeting

9. Roark [1]
Wow! Talk about fast response time! Thank you, Louise and Jim. Actually I do have lots of info on "Old" William and family--especially son, Michael. I'm originally from Eldorado and my Mom was from Equality. My grandparents, Ben & Nell Dempsey lived in Eldorado for many years (they're buried in Cottage Grove too, Jim)--he was a coal miner. I'm starting to look into my dad's family--the Mundys--but haven't gotten very far yet. My parents were divorced when I was four, and the only thing I know right no
10. Roark [1]
I'm researching William Roark and his son, Michael. "Old" William (as I call him, 'cause there are many males named after him) and Michael first bought lots in Shawneetown. I don't know what he did with the 5 sections (farmed?). Michael settled around Cottage Grove. In fact, both of them are buried in Cottage Grove Cemetery along with many other family members. I'm told that the original cemetery was Roark land. If anyone has any information on the Roarks, I'd be very interested. Thanks!

THE SMOCKS AND HARDIN COUNTY, ILLINOIS Pioneer Family In 1948 I married Anita Joyce of Delray Beach, FL whose father, Rurie Ambler SMOCK was raised in Cave In Rock, Hardin Co., IL. His parents were Thomas Jerry and May Lillian (Evertson) SMOCK. At that time I was not familiar with the SMOCK family genealogy. Fortunately, Anita had collected a good deal of family data. So after Anita died, I undertook to get a to expand the understanding of her ancestry for our two sons. To do so it was important

I'ts been awhile since I sent out this broadcast email regarding John Forrester. I pretty much know John's story: indicted for slave kidnapping but not convicted, a Lt. in the war of 1812, county judge, etc. He died in 1856 and I am trying to find out his wife's maiden name. She is listed at the Westlake Cemetery as Martha Forrester but I have been unable to ascertain any other information on g-g-g-grandmother Forrester. Since he was such a flamboyant character in southeastern Illinois I am hopeful som
