Yes, 1898 was the second biggest flood, (maybe the third), when I understand
many of the frame buildings in the town were destroyed when the levee broke.
1913 was another bad flood, and both led up to 1937, after which the town was
moved to the current site of New Shawneetown.

Anyone out there! It looks like we now have about 28 people subscribed
to the list. Slowly but surely we are growing. How about a role-call
of the surnames you are researching?

Thanks to all that have responded on the Shawneetown Floods question.
Maybe someone knows if there are lists of casualties of the 1881, 1882, 1883,
1898, or 1913 floods.
If a person was swept away in a flood, there may not be a grave.
Thanks
Dave
There are a lot are Vinsons in the Norris City area as well as Gallatin
Co. There might even be a folder on the Vinson family among Ira Shain's
worksheets at the Norris City library, copies of which are at the White
Co. genealogy library in Carmi.

Topograpic maps are wonderful resources that show things like township
boundries, cemeteries, back roads, geography, etc. It might take a little
bit of research to find where to buy them, maybe someone else on the list
can help. I have the 7.5 minute series for all of Hardin County, it takes
8 maps. The map names for Gallatin County would include:

Shawneetown
Karbers Ridge

Hello
Does anyone know if there is a way to find a marriage after 1891 if only
the bride's name is known? My great grandfather OWEN BOUTWELL died in
1891 and LEWIS BOUTWELL (my grandfather) was apparently left with his
step-mother CELIA (LAMB) BOUTWELL along with two siblings PEARL and
WILLIE BOUTWELL according to probate records. I haven't been able to
find them after his death and possibly it is because she remarried.
Any help is appreciated.
