Jon, I don't remember anything there, except farms. I think that's the
road from Eldorado down to RT 13 (College Rd). There is a lot of strip
mining for coal in southern Ill and I've also seen a lot of those little
pumps for gas and oil around. Maybe the guy was speculating. Wish I
could help. Judy
Does anyone have info on the following family?
Marion C. Johnson b. 1860 d. 1919 married Rose Caroline Thompson. The
lived in the Karbers Ridge area on a 20 acre farm previously owned by
her father. The Johnson cemetary is located on that land.
Children - 1] Stella Johnson
2] "Charlie" Charles Elmer Johnson m. Alice Tyree
3] James Samuel Johnson
4] "Ollie" Oliver Johnson m. Oma Cullum
5] Daisy Belle Johnson m. William Henson
6] David M. Johnson m. Ollie Mae Milligan
Thanks for your help. Judy

Jon, It's been a while, but my memory says there is no town there. I
also just looked at a map. Maybe there was a community at one time. I
just drove that road last fall (College Road) from Eldorado down to Rt
13 and I don't remember anything out there except a few farms. You know
there is strip mining in that whole southern area - mostly coal.

VARNIER / VARNER
Adin/Adeon VARNIER was an early settler of Gallatin Co., IL, and d. there in 1832. He was b. 1790-1800 in VA, and m. Jane M. CRAWFORD in 1825 Mason Co., KY. Their known children (all b. in Gallatin Co., IL, and d. in Adams Co., IL) were: Elmina VARNIER (1826 - 1917); Mason C. VARNIER (1828 - 1914); and James H. VARNIER (1831 - 1845).
It's in Cottage Grove township and just east of where
the college is now is where cottage grove community
was. I believe the polling place is still there and so
is the cemetery. The mines got everything else.
At one time Cottage Grove had a post office (1878-1909),
general store, doctors office, drugstore, school and
church and some residences.

Is anyone else out there finding a pletoria of Reuben & Edmond Bakers ??
I can't help but think that they all fit in somewhere..
Elijah Baker (Saline) had what looks to be twins that he named Edmond & Reuben
A Reuben was KIA in Mexico in 1847 from Gallitin Co.
My Edmond had a Edmond & (I believe) a Reuben
If Elijah & Edmon are brothers then who was their mother ?
Elizabeth Rice was b 1793. Elijah was b 1805 (per 1850 census) Kinda doubtful
even then. I believe that Elizabeth was Edmond's 2nd wife.

I read somewhere that a Cullan Baker ran afoul of the law sometime after the
Civil war. Was this notorious Baker from Illinois ?? Can anyone fill me in on
this ?
I did note 1 Cullan Baker in Illinois during the 1860 census.
I have this funny feeling.........please tell me he didn't have a brother
named Reuben or Edmond !!

It is extremely unlikely that your people lived in Shawneetown from
1794-1800 because there just wasn't anything there at that time. The
land office was not opened until 1810-1811. In addition, it would be
rare for people to move west and then east. I would be looking for them
in KY in that time frame, which saw many settlers from 1785 to 1800.
Hope I sound helpful and not grouchy.

life at his home in the village of Karbers Ridge April 24, 1902. He was
married to Elizabeth Gray in 1846. Seven children blessed this union, three
sons and four daughters James J. Williams, Sarah J.
Can anyone give me a list of Edmond Baker + Elizabeth Rice 's children ??
I FIRMLY believe that this was a SECOND m for Edmond.
I could use some better dates for Elijah Baker s/o Edmond
WAS he b 1805/6 OR 1810 ??? 1805/6 would make it UNLIKELY that his mother
was Elizabeth b 1793 and therefore from a 1st m of Edmond.
He is shown in the 1820 Franklin Co Ill census w/older female. NOT Elizabeth.
I found a m record of an Edmond & Elizabeth from 1826, is this them ???
Edmond was b 1776/1780 in South Carolin
