Hi Hardin County Rooters:
I know the above-referenced book by Ed Ferrell is out there somewhere. But, my library has tried to request it through inter-library loan, and has come up empty-handed.
If I can find out where a copy is located, my library can make a direct request for a loan.
If you know where a copy can be found, please let me know.
Thanks!

Hi Roger,
I'd be interested in information about out-of-town subscription to the Hardin County Independent. Can you check one of your back issues and post a phone number or address for subscriptions?
I appreciate it!

I just received about 3 months worth of back issues of the Hardin County
Independent (with thanks to my father-in-law). They have been running a
picture on the bottom of the front page of some scenic sight in or near
Hardin County. The March 26th issue has a picture of the Illinois Iron
Furnace in 1937 and includes this caption:
"Iron was the first mineral discovered in the county a few miles north of
Elizabethtown shortly after the first settlers arrived. In 1837 the
Illinois Iron Furnace was erected.
Thanks, Wanda. $22.50 a year ... what a bargain. I am now subscribed!

I am new to this list and am looking for help. My records show that Clemens
G. Ferrel(l) bought land in Hardin County with a military land warrant in
1851. He did not stay long in IL because he is shown on a state census in
IA in 1854. Clemens' wife in 1851 was Miriam (Hollowell) Ferrel, but she is
not with him in IA and he marries again in IA in 1856. Can anyone help me
find out what happened to Miriam and perhaps where she is buried? Clemens'
name is often listed as Clement, Clements, Clemmons, Clemm
In response to the roll call (and by the way, thanks for setting up this
message board for Hardin County. I'm already on Pope County's and this is

>William McAvoy came to Equality in 1855. In 1903, as an old man, he told
Prof. George W. Smith about some of the history of the town and the
saltworks. Smith describes him as a "courteous old gentleman." Does anybody
know anything about his descendants. I'm interested if they still have any
of the things he collected about the saltworks.

Hi Folks,
I've been thinking for a while now about how I might obtain a photograph of the area where my father's family came from.
I wonder if anyone on this list might have an old photo or two they are willing to share.
I would be interested in photos of the villages of Elizabethtown and Golconda and/or also any scenic depiction of the countryside. Of course, the older the better.
Naturally, I would pay for copying/mailing costs.
Please email me if you have a photo or two to share.
Thanks.

A group of 7 met again tonight to discuss forming a Pope Co. Group.
We were wondering if you could pass on the word to ones you might think
would be interested- or post it on your page. We came up with this note.
An organizational meeting is being held to determine interest in
forming a Genealogical Society in Pope Co. The meeting will be held
at 7:00p.m. on June 15, at Pope County Historical Annex located at the
corner of Main Street and Columbus in Golconda, IL. All interested

Judy are you going to publish these photos and share. I have been trying to
figure out when I am ever going to get a chance to visit there.
Of Course you know that Cave-in-Rock is now a resort. or some kind of state
park. I would like to take the R.V. there for at least a couple of weeks,
but know there is no chance of it this year.
As I look at the Atlas, the entire area our folks came from is senic routes.
don't you think we need a female field trip for about a month into So. Il.

My Hardin county surnames are: ANDERSON, ASHFORD, BLISS, CLARY, COWSERT,
DAVIS, HOLLOMAN, JACKSON, KEELING, KING, LANE, MARTIN, STACY, WALKER,
WOLF. I would love any information on any of these names. I am also
trying to get ahold of a copy of the book on Hardin county descendants
that the historical society put out in 1987. I was told it was no longer
available and I haven't been able to get it on inter-library loan
either.
