The Spectator was published at least from 1860 through 1865 (perhaps longer) in
Oquaka. Much of those years are on microfilm in Salt Lake. Makes very
interesting reading if you have any interest in Civil War history.

Hi, maybe you can answer a couple questions for me.
A year of so ago I went to the Court House at Oquawka to look for a
Declaration of Intent for my great grandfather, Patrick Glynn. I knew he was
there in 1860 and entered the Civil War at Biggsville in 1862.
They were very nice at the court house and showed me the books, kept in very
nice a

God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December.
Just posted my mother's story of her life, which started in 1888, in Raritan,
on the Henderson Co. USGenWeb archives. Would love to have you share her
memories with me.

Bill, Thanks so much for sharing the Jamison Sale information. My
Husband and I really enjoyed examining the contents and prices. It gave
us some insight into what the circumstances of daily life was like in
1843. This was a literate and prosperous family for the times.
I have several questions maybe you or someone out there can answer:
#1. I see that some things sold for $2.12 1/2 What denominations of
coins was there at that time?
#2. What did they use the tar for?
#3. What were the "steel yards"?

Does anyone know what newspapers were published in Henderson Co., esp.
Oquawka, and what period of time they were published? Are any of these
newspapers on microfilm? If so, are they available through inter-library
loan? I've surfed all over in Illinois Research sites on the net, but could
not find this information.
Ginny in Seattle
Ginny,
There was the Biggsville Clipper and all that info is on tape
at the IL State Historical Society but I don't know about
interlibrary loan or the dates.
