I don't know. The farthest I've gone back is to Edward who was born in Virginia about 1760. Several families seem to have removed together. The only other item I have is that his father was from Ireland.

Sure. I don't know if this is the right Zelpha. There are 2 in the IL. area in question. Our Zelpha was a nurse in the Civil War, and would have had to be older that 6 in 1850, so yours might be the other one. I know her Dad's name was Herod Hackett & they were from TN. Thanks. Sue

Theophilus Cook did come on the wagon train from
Sumner Co., TN to IL.
Does anyone have any more names to add to the list?
I'd like to post what I have so far, if people are
interested.

What country do you credit as the "motherland" of the
Sopers? Within my family mass there is a lot of
discussion, and so agreement. I would like to hear
another side. Thanks, Donna

I have a Samuel Soper who fought with the Empirialists
in the Revolutionary War, and so afterward his land
was taken from him and he had to leave the country.
He and his wife Bathsheba, and thier children headed
for Canada. Samuel died on hi way to the Fort where
they were going to make their home. Bathsheba
remarried - to a Wilson. I have the childrens names
and information for many of them, but I didn't know
how far back these Sopers you have listed go. If you
would like more, just let me know. Donn

Hi, Neva,
I remember riding the L&N RR from St. Louis to McLeansboro when I was a child
of eight. That was in 1934. It went thru Mt. Vernon at that time.

Hello Listers,
I have a copy of the Jefferson Co, IL death certificate of Mary Ann
Lowery born circa 1842 and died 11 June 1908. THe certificate states that
she was buried in Temple Cem, and that she died in Bluford, IL (which I know
is Jefferson Co). I am trying to determine which Lowery she married. Age at
time of death was 66 y, 9m., and states she was married. Does anyone know
where Temple cem is ?? Has it been renamed??
Thanks for all help!

This is one of the stones that I found at the New Hope Cein Belle RIve. It
was almost buried and was in bad shape but you can still make it out. It is
on the cemetery page on the ILJENWEB Jefferson Co site.

Hello Neva,
I'm not sure how far back the L&N RR goes back through time. I do know I
rode it from St. Louis to Mt. Vernon in the early 1940s and through the
50s with my parents. Perhaps the St. Louis Historical Society would be able
to help as the train left from the Main Station which was around 13th and
Delmar I believe. There is also a website that I came across not too long
ago that listed the histories of various Rail Companies. I believe I found
it through Cyndi's list.
Sorry I couldn't be of
Hi Donna,
From my understanding, there are two branches of Soper's. The Northern
branch, of which this Samuel would be a part and then my line....the
Southern branch. They were called that because when they left Maryland,
they went to Sumner County, Tennessee and then Illinois. The Northern
Branch were in Maryland, NY, CT, Michigan, Canada, etc. But I really
appreciate your writing...because it "might have been".
God Bless America!
