Hi,
I just posted an old death notice for Adelia Maria BUTCHER of Galena, Illinois, formerly of Ellsworth, Maine. This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of Ballou's Pictorial (Boston, MA) newspaper dated June 27, 1857, and you can see it online here:

Hello everyone,
Does anyone happen to know anything about Council HIll Cemetary? Specifically, is it a non-denominational cemetary?
Also, where might I find burial records for the cemetary in question? Has anyone ever looked at a burial record? I've read that some of these records contain religious information on the de

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to donate their old genealogy books to me. I am looking to open a genealogy library in California after I receive my masters in Library Science. (probably at least 4 years from now). Also, if anyone wants to send their family pedigrees or history to me that would be great too!

Teri, I do not normally bother with requests for "blanket" surname searches, but it's slow today. If your surname Moody hails from Vermont, I found something that may be of interest to you. Incidentally, the 1855 Il. state census only indicates head of household. All others in the h/h are indicated by gender and age grou

I visited the JoDaviess court house a few years ago and searched through naturalization papers and found a number of my ancestors and family members. I don't know if these are "intent" documents, but the papers state giving up allegiance to the "King of Prussia". Hope this helps.

Stephen,
The courthouse in Galena is a wealth of information on people who lived in Jo Daviess County from about 1870 forward. Records prior to that time are relatively scarce and you probably won't find much. Some of my relative were significant land owners in the 1840s and I can find nothing on them.

I don't have any info on the Galena Fire Department but I know from experience that a Fire dept. chief's hat usually has the number 1 on it to signify his position in the "house". My step dad is a retired policeman here in Chicago and he always talked about the police dept. and the fire dept. as well as their history.

Stephen, I believe you should try the Jo Daviess courthouse for
naturalization records. If not there, they probably have been microfilmed
and are at the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) in DeKalb, IL.
It is located at Northern Illinois University. You can view their website
and get more information. Just put "IRAD" in Google and you should find it
easily.
