3. [ILJOHNSO-L] Re: ILJOHNSO-D Digest V00 #69 [1]
I'd like to say thank you to Connie and everyone who types these biographies. By reading through the one on Guilford Pippins, I came across several names that put me several generations back. The names are Porter and Park, and I have been researching them here in NC, where they lived before moving to IL. Actually, the Parks did not move, a daughter just married a Porter and they moved. If anyone is interested in those lines in NC, please let me know. Carole Anderson

Kevin, Apology accepted by me too. I was so upset when I realized I had just skimmed over the message and missed what was happening and I had offered to help, that I even made typos. I do a lot of skimming the messages because I get between 100 and 200 messages a day. Buncombe is so small, as the old saying goes, if you blink your eyes you will miss it. If you still think the Platt Map will help, I will do what I said in the beginning. By the way, I am glad you like your "New Name". Sorry for my

Dear Connie, Thanks for the reply. I have written to the Johnson Co recorder,in order to obtain a photocopy of the subdivision plat. I wanted to know,if Buncombe is incorporated as a village or town. I also appreciate the biographical reference, although I already had that. Thank you,for your help. Hi Chris, "OT" is Off Topic. . . sometimes get into trouble if we stray to far from the purpose of the list. Your G-grandfather sounds like a wonderful man. My husband and I have made several trips to Southern Illinois to research my mother's family. She marr. my father in 1924, moved to WI and never went home again. I knew nothing of my southern "kin." After she passed away in 1981, we decided to make a pilgrimage to the place she had grown up. So, armed with just a few of Mama's stories, we took off

OK, I'm dying to know...what is OT? My folks come from Johnson County and small town schools, Murrie, Simpson, so on. They may not all talk good (proper) english but they sure are nice, hard working, down to earth people that know how to be nice, not hurt feelings. Some were share croppers and didn't get much schoolin. But they sure know how to say "I love you" and mean it. So I don't get in trouble for being OT (?) I will say that William Isaac Faulkner was my great grandfather and through my resea

In your information on Buncombe, there is a mention of a Elkins near there. I am a descendant of the Elkins that settled there in about 1809. I am woundering if you have any information on them in more detail than whats in the book " A History of Johnson County" by Mrs Chapman. John Elkins settled there with his family after moving from KY, SC and NC. I have traced my family line to John through his son Richard, who lived his adult life in Johnson County. His son, Henry moved with his family to Texas.

To all you Casey researchers I was reading Green Randolph CASEY history and Randolph CASEY manuscript. I have read these at least 10 times , believe me sometimes you miss something. Make a short story I read the surnames DORSEY, TODD, well these two surnames stuck out . The Dorsey line which will have members of my RIDGELY, HOWARD families and many others. The Todd family I do know that in Montgomery Co IL Samuel CASEY m. Sarah TODD . I wonder if this Todd family connects. Something I will have to check out

Isn't there also some very large pyramids in Southern Illinois? Barbara
13. [ILJOHNSO-L] Southern Illinois named Little Egypt [1]
Yes you are correct the story is that as you said there was a drought in Northern Illinois and the folks came to Southern IL and bought grain and seed if I remember correctly. The towns Cairo, Thebes, Tamms I believe are Egyptian towns, maybe Joppa, and I think Dongola also. This may be correct it sticks out in my mine. Also Vienna , Dongola , Goreville, Century, Shawnee, Joppa, Cobden, Egyptian, all these schools play in the Southwest Egyptian Conference. ----- Original Message ----- From: J.D. Gammon

A very interesting story about Buncombe.!!..I lived there from 1936 to 1942 and it still has very fond memories for me...I was interesteed also to hear that it was named after Buncombe N. Carolina...The story they told in the Buncombe Elementary School was that Buncombe was settled by former members of the Revolutionary Army under General Washington and they had a meeting to decide on a name and several were suggested, but one man said that he wanted it named in memory of the General and also then said that
15. Re: [ILJOHNSO-L] Buncombe [1]
For many years old timers in southern Illinois, from about Benton-West Frankfort south, have referred to the area as "Little Eqypt". As the previous story had it, there was a terrible drought in the midwest with the exception of the southern counties of Illinois, so farmers and merchants from Kentucky, Northern Illinois, Missouri, Indiana and even Michigan drove wagon teams down into the Union, Johnson, Williamson, Franklin, Jackson and Saline counties area, and loaded up with corn. My grandfather tells of

Looking for the parents of Samantha Reid, born in May 1880 and died 11-30-1906. She married George W.Simpson on10-15-1899. I believe she could be the daughter listed in the 1880 Johnson Co Fed. Census as S.E. Reid in the household of Burton Reid and Estha F. VanCleve. I plan on ordering the marriage certificate, but didn't know if anyone out there was working on this family. Terry Ceballos

18. [ILJOHNSO-L] Mohlers [1]
Good Afternoon Folks, I am looking for information on John and Martha Mohler both born early 1820's NC. John and Martha must have arrived in Johnson Co. just after the 1860 census. I have found marriage listings for several of their children ranging from 1864-1880's. One of their older sons Wm. Pinkney possibly owned a Feed and Grain Store in Goreville. If anyone with Mohler connections has any information for me or wants to exchange information let me know. My other Johnson Co. families are: Deaton,H
