1. Re: asylum history [1]
Thanks, Tim, for your explanation regarding the process of admissions to the state asylums. Would you happen to know whether the required court hearings would take place in the county where the person resided or in the county where they were committed? A cousin's family history states that our common ancestor was committed to Bartonville State Hospital. I believe that is possibly the same hospital as Peoria State Hospital as it was also operated by Zeller. Am I correct? Anyway, this ance
2. Ann Edwards [1]
Ann Edwards was the wife of Robert Edwards and her maiden name was Saunders. She was born in England in 1803 and died in 1899. She was listed as living in Troy Grove in 1899. I would like to know who her parents were. I think the wife of Thomas Edwards, Elizabeth Cadle was a sister but I can not find a connection. Elizabeth was born in 1814 also in England. Roger Long

4. Re: [ILLASALLE] asylum history [1]
The land that now contains the LaSalle County Nursing Home is what they are referring to with the word "asylum". It also housed the aged and incapacitated. There WAS a book called "Index to the Insane and Feeble Minded" that indexed all court ordered housing to the county and state facilities. Back in about 1979 or 1980 the book was transferred from the County Clerk to the Circuit Clerk. Last time I went in to inquire as to a search of it I was met with blank stares. I don't know if it's since been loc
5. Coss [1]
Looking for will of John Coss who died in LaSalle County IL Oct 22, 1877 buried Oct. 25 in Mendota, Il. How can I get a copy of his will? Thank you Jane Bubier.
6. Re: [ILLASALLE] Coss [1]
The will and probate are at the LaSalle County Genealogy Guild. The charge is $10 for a copy of the file which may have from 4 to 40 pages. E-mail the Guild at lscgg@sbcglobal.net with your name and address and what you want and they will copy it and send it to you. Then you can send the money. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Bubier" To: Sent: Wednesday, November 02, 2005 8:02 AM Subject: [ILLASALLE] Coss > Looking for will of John Coss who died i

8. RE: [ILLASALLE] asylum history [1]
Thanks for all the info, Margaret. The info about the place in Wedron is very interesting, and if anyone else has info or any sort of first-hand (or any hand) accounts, please send it on. My great-uncle by marriage was there for a number of months for what was probably called "nervous exhaustion" at the time. Shelly-- Just to make sure I clarified the "same hospital or not" issue (I tend to get lost in the details), yes, Bartonville and the Peoria State Hospital were one and the same. George Zeller took over as superintendent in 1902. He was noted for his humane treatment of patients and apparently served as superintendent for many years. 12. Re: [ILLASALLE] Re: asylum history [1]
Hi Everyone, About twenty years ago, a lady in LaSalle County, who was trained as a psychiatric nurse, stated that it took three people's consent to commit someone. And they never, ever came out once they were committed according to her. (We were speaking about the time period 1945 and before.) So that seems to point to some kind of committal papers, but she gave no further information. I have been looking for Gurine/a Jensen who was born about 1858 in Norway and supposedly ended her days in a U

14. Adam & Johanna (Gruel) Jacob [1]
Hello, I have been researching Martin Gruel's daughters and am looking for a marriage certificate for his daughter Johanna. She married Adam Jacob on September 18, 1861 in LaSalle county. They had seven children and Johanna died in 1871 at the age of 30. I know she is buried at St. John's cemetery in Somonauk IL. Adam then married a lady by the name of Katherine and they brought six more children into the world. If you can find any information on Adam or Johanna Jacob, I would appreciate it. Thank

Phyllis- My great grandmother was in the Institution in Kankakee. I found her in the 1900 Census. They evidently had the Census for each institution, that is, there was a separate page for the inmates of Kankakee. 19. Re: [ILLASALLE] Adam & Johanna (Gruel) Jacob [1]
Adam Jacob married Hannah Crew on September 19, 1861 in LaSalle County. That is what the state marriage index says. I can get you a copy of the marriage certificate if you want it but it won't name the parents or give additional information. Let me know if you want it and I will send it to you. There is an Adam Jacob that married Hannah Mistek in 1858 in Peoria County. LaSalle County Genealogy Guild ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan" To:

Roger-- I can save you a little time on the English records. I have been away from the English searches for a while, so when I looked closer at the Hickock site and saw that Martha was from Outwell, I did a search and found that Outwell was (and maybe still is) a village in Norfolk County in England. I also found some unsubstantiated records on FamilySearch that show Ann and Robert marrying in 1827 in Soham, Cambridge. Therefore, their marriage would NOT be found on the BMD site. Cambridge, or Cambridgeshi

Nancy, If you find out where you relatives are buried in Mendota or close surounding cemeteries, I would take digital photos for you if you would like me to. I can't do any research for you but if the info you might get from others gives a definate cemetery or location, I could probably get you a digital photo and email back to you. I live in Mendota. I sense that you are not close or perhaps you are and just looking for the info . Just let me know. My name is also Nancy. ----- Original Message --

We just talked about the St. Joseph's Health Resort at the meeting of the Ottawa History Group Tuesday night. The Mayor of Chicago Big Bill Thompson spent 2 weeks there in the 30's after having his appendix removed. There were many articles in the paper at the time and he turned the Christmas lights on in Ottawa while he was there. Many politicians came to visit him there. The church there is still going. They have services there every week. Someone bought the building and they are rehabbing it. It h

Thank you for the information but if there is no other information on it, it won't help. I saw that on the marriage records also. Since Johanna died about three months after giving birth to her last child, Eddie (who died ten days after his mother), do you have any death records? Twila and Jenan-- Thanks very much for the additional info about the sanitarium. It'd be great to time-travel back to the heyday and see what was going on there. And Irene, again, if you would like me to try to look up anyone in the census 1900 or earlier) for the LaSalle County asylum, just send me a private e-mail.
