I have just finished posting some biographies posted to the Marion County

Go post those you have [link to boards from Marion County web page] -- the
Rootsweb search engine will pick up the surnames when someone does a search
and you may help someone and find a new relative.
Cite your source. Otherwise it is just another questionable item. As we all
know, there is a lot of garbage out there, creative genealogy and so on. A

Could someone please look up for me the burial place of my great grandfather,
William L. Hazen LITTLE. Reportedly he died when struck by a train in Pana on
January 25, 1919 and was buried in Vernon, IL on January 28, 1919. Any other
information anyone may have about him will be appreciated. Might there be an
obituary in a newspaper archive?
Thanks for your help.

I never mentioned the Marion County Courthouse at Salem, Illinois
because
they are not very friendly and certainly not very helpful either.
They will not let anyone look at the courtbooks nor the indexes and you
have to
give them as much information as possible before THEY will look it up
if
they do.

I wrote to the Centralia Sentinel and had the death date of my relative and
asked for the obituary and they sent it to me--didn't even charge me. Very
good service if you ask me!

Hi, Tom,
To add to what Jo Ann said, I made my very first trip to the Springfield
Historical Library last week. I traveled north to Springfield on Route 55.
It turns into 6th Street going north and is a one way street. As you get
downtown, stay in the LEFT lane, it will allow you to jog off onto the ramp
to parking under the Old State Capitol. The elevator to the Library is at
the corner of the building that you just drove past - the southeast corner.
Remember the color of the concrete pillar where you

There are two sets of micrifilm of old newspapers in Salem, One in the
Geneological library and one upstairs in the public portion that cover
differing times and papers. They seem to cover anything in Salem after
1800. I believe the Centralia Sentinal has a set of their own for that
paper that would be in Centralia.
Do you know what part of the county you are looking in?
I have limited experience with the films but have found usefull info

I have been noting stuff about Railroads since my g-grandfather was a
railroad man. This is just something I ran across online Apologies for not
including url. Anyone else have a railroad man in their family?
Unfortunately, pension records, pay records etc are only carefully
recorded and easily accesible starting in the 1930s. Not useful to me, my
ancestor worked c. 1851-1880
Knowing just a little about the railroad lines can sometimes explain a

I must defend the library at Mt. Vernon. They are very nice people and
are helpfull. As to the interlibrary loan. You MUST go thru your local

There are actually 2 commections at Mt Vernon. One is owned by the
local DAR and the other is the Shawnee Library system geneological
library. There are slightly different rules for the two collections.
Many of the books are available for interlibrary loan. But, some of the

Mr. Hickey,
To the best of my knowledge, there are three places you could go

first one is the library of the Marion County Historical and Genealogical

downtown Salem,

which is

Marion County Genealogical & Historical Society is one of the best around.
They are very helpful and knowledgeable too. In 1997 they were located
downstairs in the public library---on the main street.
The last I heard, the hours they are open are 12--4 p. m. Wednesday
afternoons. Like many gen. societies, many, many members are out of
town/out of state and much is left up to a few who live locally. It is a
place not to miss. They have an obit. file in their library from 1976.

I have been informed that the Marion County society has no objection to
lookups in their cemetery books. Therefore, I have no objection. Unless I
hear differently, it is okay to ask for cemetery lookups in those books and
have the answers posted on this list so all can share.
