James Thomas and Elizabeht Jane Crumbaugh donated the land and finances for
starting the J.T. and E.J. Crumbaugh Spiritualist Church and Library in
LeRoy. In the basement of the library is the LeRoy Historical Society. It is
not open all the time but you could call the library and get the hours. Ralph
Duvick and Helen Hume along with others has worked really hard and
consistently in the society and they have done a wonderful job. They have
records, exhibits etc. They have done a great job.

My husband's maternal grandfather, Ortis HATFIELD, was a preacher for the
Methodist Church in McLean County for at least a period of time. (I don't
have any dates for him.) My mother-in-law, Mildred (Hatfield) BAIZE was born
at Brokaw Hospital in Normal in 1911. Her mother, Ethel HERROD, died when
mom was 10 years old and mom and her sisters were placed in an orphanage in
Bloomington when her father remarried.
Any suggestions for finding out the churches where Ortis preached?

Dear County List,
As of yesterday, we have uploaded a page with some church history and
surnames of members (as far as we have them) for several more Illinois
Counties, which may be of some help to researchers who have ancestors who
were members of the Primitive Baptist church. We have now entered
similar pages for over 70 counties in Illinois, as a link to our homepage
on our website. The information regarding the members names comes from a
database in our library computer which is not on-line, but the

Yes, the Bloomington Public Library still does look ups. They did one for me
back in April. I don't know what they charge because they did it for me for
free on account that their microfilm machine was out of service for the 2
months I waited for them to respond to my query. I'm sure it would only
normally take them a few weeks to do it through normal mailing processes.
But they definitely DO do obituary lookups.

Have you tried obtaining an obituary from the newspaper where he was calling
his hometown? Usually the family puts an obituary in the hometown
newspaper.
The death certificate would be filed in the county where the person died.
However, back in 1863 there may not be a death certificate or obituary
available. Death certificates weren't required in counties until the late
1800s I believe. They weren't filed with the state until the 1910s or 1920s
in Missouri I think. There may not have been a newspaper

I am searching for the James H. and Mary Sirrine or Sirrene family, who were living in McClean Co. in 1863 per a will. Can anyone tell me whether they are listed in the 1860 or 1870 census of McClean?
Thanks

If the person died in a different county than where his/her property is
located, the will would be probated where the property is located. This
could be the case if they were visting someone in another county or if they
were ill and went to a hospital in another county. If that is not the case,
then they probably just did not have any significant property (such as land)
and they may not have even had a will. If they had a sizeable estate (other
than property jointly held) the property would be dist
Fellow listers,
Heres an appeal to all of you to pull out the copies of the SSAN
application forms you already have filed away in your "stuff" and post them
at Rootsweb.
I just did it for the ones I have and its really easy. :O)
1. Go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/
2. Scroll down the home page to Social Security Death Index and click on it.
3. Enter the name of the person who is on the form you have into the search
engine.
4. When the right entry comes up, go over to the far right and click on "Add

I just thought I would spread the word that the fees for getting a copy of a Social Security Application are going up drastically on 1 July 2001. If you apply before then you will be charged the old amount which is now $7 if you know the number, and $16.50 if you do not.
The new fees are posted at:
http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm
It appears that the increases are more than substantial, they are gigantic.
This means that the time for procrastination is over.
