Sorry to hear about that. We were hoping to visit it when we returned there
for a visit. In fact we had written it down this evening as a reminder. Et

Elmer,
I have the book "Semi-Centenarians of Butler Grove Township and a Brief History of the Village of Butler" by Rev. T. E. Spilman; Sept. 1878
The book has an index but I have discovered it is only an index of the people whose biographies are included. It doesn't include those names that are within the biographies.
In the biographies section, included are:
Mrs. Mary Scherer (wife of David) page 13
Jacob Cress (husband of Miss Helena Scherer) page 92
Mrs. Helena Cress (wife of Jacob Cress, daughter of

Elmer, I have a Catherine Cress who married a cousin in 1830 in
Montgomery Co. His name was David Diedrick Brown. I have an aprox.
birth date of 1810 and a death date of 1860 in Montgomery Co. on her. I
don't have her parents, but they were some of the earliest settlers.
There was a connection with the Blackwelders.
Were there two Catherine Cresses or is it the same one in a different
marriage?

ET, I always like to have a general idea where someone lives, so I
don't say something stupid like assuming that you live in the area that
you're asking about.
I was born in Litchfield and finished high school there, so I have some
knowledge of what has gone on there. I've lived all my adult life,
until about 7 years ago, in St. Louis. When in St. Louis, we
frequently drive up for dinner at the "Gardens", a well known
restaurant in Litchfield...known for their Iowa cut Pork Chops. If you

Does anyone have information on Rufus Scherer, brother of John J (Jack )Scherer? He was a son of Dr. Eli Scherer. According to what I have he would have been born abt 1841 to Dr. Eli and Lavina Cress Scherer. Does anyone have a burial info or obit on him? In the 1850 census there was a D.R. Scherer living with Jacob Cress Sr which if this info is correct, would be his Grandfather. So D.R. Scherer or Rufus I believe is the same person. Any help on this anyone? Tiss, No this isn't the same Catherine. Mine was born in 1840 and married
John Scherer in 1858. There were lots of Cresses in that area. I even saw
where a Cress married a Cress. So there seemed to be different branches of
Cresses but probably all directly related. Sorry I can't help you on your

I am wondering if Eli Sherer b 1833 , son of Dr Eli Scherer , is known later as Eli Cress. After his father died in 1849 he was living with Jacob Cress, his uncle. Later in the census 1870 and 1880 I wasn't able to find Eli Scherer but there was an Eli Cress born about the same year as Eli Scherer. I am wondering if Jacob Cress maybe adopted Eli. Anyone know? Et
