I found two entries on the Morgan Co. site that I think are for my 3g-grandfather: ** March 5, 1865, Japhana P. Gray died intestate Morgan Co., IL (from the bond book transcriptions). Yes, there is currently an East Alton (of course, not in Morgan Co. but in Madison Co.) It is just east of IL Rt. 3, southeast of Alton - between there and Wood River. If you look in a road atlas, and use the blow-up of the St. Louis area, you can see it. I am assuming that there would be city directories for Alton. Can anyone tell me if there is currently a city called East Alton? My grandparents apparently lived in East Alton in 1919. I'm trying to find them in the 1920 census, but since there are so many different districts, I'd like to know how large the East Alton area was.
