10. Looking for G.A.R. Records [1]
According to his Civil War pension file, my great great grandfather, Alois Hildenbrand, lived in Tower Hill, Shelby County, from 1872 to 1883. His obituary from Wichita, Kansas, in 1886, alludes to his membership in the Grand Army of the Republic at the time of his death. Having recently received a marriage license certificate for one of my PONSLER ancestors I thought I would try again BUT am not sure what "the charge of $5.00 covers only a five year period for searching" really means. Does that mean $5.00 per name in a 5 year period or if in any case I have an actual date do they still charge the $5.00 fee for looking it up + the cost of the copy? Dottie, Cowden was laid out and plotted by John Maguire on April 15, 1872, under the supervision of H.M. Cowden, whom the city was named after. This information I got from the 1881 Combined History of Shelby and Moultrie county. There is no bio on H.M. Cowden. Hope this bit of information helps. I'm trying to track down the relationship of Amassa, Levi and John "BAILS" (spelling on the 1850 census for Shelby Co, IL). Also would like to know where they are buried. Shelby County Probate Book 8 1866-1867 shows Bales, Levi - Estate April. 1866 - (from Shelby County Historical and Genealogical Society) Rhoda, wife of John appears as "widow" on 1880 census.
