Jean,
Logansport is in the northern part of Cass County and is the county seat.
Howard county is just south of Cass County and Kokomo is its county seat.

I've put together a webpage
about researching in Indiana which covers availability of vital records in
Indiana Counties. Most counties started birth and death records in 1882
with some larger municipal areas starting about 1875. The problem is that
many doctors, midwives and undertakers didn't bother with registering these
events, esp. if they were away from the county seat and it was the dead of
winter.
Cass County was real primitive in 1832, although th
Is there a source of records that covers 1832 births in Cass County? My
ggrandfather, William W. Clark, was born in Logansport Jan 18, 1832 and I
would like to know if his Mother and Father are listed and what their origins
were.

Charlotte,
My Charles E Miller was born in Tompkins Co c 1845. The names you gave in
you note Sunday do not correspond with my Charles's family. My Charles
came with his family to Michigan and then 3-4 brothers went to Indiana.
Several strayed in MI as did a sister, Elizabeth.
Don't think we have much of a match. Sorry, Let me know if you need
more information.

Here is a site that I hope you find helpful in regards to Indiana soldiers.

Charlotte,
Thanks for your quick response to my query. The Charles E. Miller (CEM) I
am searching for is a great great uncle (ggu) of my wife. Whether the
Charles E. Miller that I have raised a concern about is the same as her
great great uncle is the reason for the search.
Why Cass Co.? Because we learned last week that his CW unit was from Cass
Co. and the age of the Cass Co CEM is about the right age for her ggu.
Her ggu was born in NY State, family moved to Michigan and at least 3
sons moved to
Kurt,
None of your information rings a bell. And I don't have that information on my
Millers, so I'm still willing to explore. What time period are talking about your

Wendell's siblings were. But there was a John Miller that had lived with him in
Cass Co., in the 1860 census. And Since he named one of his children Charles maybe
he had a brother name Charles. I would like to know more about your Charles.

Dick,
I don't know if there is a source, but you could check a obit or a death
certificate, or church records, could give you the information you are looking
for.

Another note on this subject....
Even after the statewide registration was required, births were still not
always registered. I have at least 3 alone in Cass County from the early
1900s that there are no records for, but we know they were born there.

I was told at the archives in Indianapolis that Indiana was not required to
register births until about 1885. I am looking for an 1887 record and can't
find a birth record either. 1885 seems awfully late, but the source I heard
this from is reliable. Someone else out there may know more. Hope this
helps.
