Maureen wanted to know if the Calcutta (Kolkata) Municipal Corporation could be contacted via e-mail. The corporation have a website: www.calmanac.org. It has e-mail addresses, but I am not sure if anybody ever checks the mails. At least, I never got any response from them. I would suggest Maureen to write to them and if she doesn't get any reply, she could write to me. I am not sure if I would be able to help her, but I can give it a try. Thanks, Achintyarup Ray aray0@rediffmail.com Calcutta ________

4. [India-L] Gaunt family in Madras [0.976788]
My grandfather Albert Frank Gaunt went to India in 1924 to work for The Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company. I understand that he married a Mabel Kernohan (nee Gowens) in Madras on 5th May 1929. I have tried to find this marriage in the records held in the British Library without success. Does anyone know whether any other records exist of marriages of this time? Also does anyone know whether any records exist relating to workers of the railway company? They went on to Australia around 1930.

Back on the list....with a new riddle to solve. Seek information on Lt. Gen. William Cullen (1787-1862). After retiring from the army, WC was Resident to the Maharaja of Travancore. I am wondering if there could be a Cullen link to Edward Cullen (1770-1847), Barack Master of Wexford District. This Edward married Martha Brownrigg, sister of Sir Robert Brownrigg. They had one daughter Catherine Eliza Cullen. Any further information on William and/or Edward Cullen would be most welcome. Many thanks, Ann B

Hello, Would anyone know if there is/was a place in India/Pakistan called Banack? I have an ancestor who was transferred from the Bombay Army (1st Eur.Reg.) to the unattached list in 1860. He is listed in the unattached muster rolls that year as a sergeant and in the 'Remarks' field it says 'Bk'. I have no idea what this means, but I thought perhaps since another soldiers 'Remarks' field says 'Banack' that Bk might have been an abbreviation for that. Other soldiers' remarks field say things like
23. RE: [India-L] Two Madras marriages [0.976788]
I have come across the FRUVALL name previously in connection with the severe cyclone which hit Masulipatam on 1 November 1864. Many members of the Fruvall family [as well as thousands of others] were drowned/swept away or otherwise died in this event. A monument was erected to the family. This is described on pp 197-8 in Theon Wilkinson's "Two Monsoons" and also in more details in Vol. II of Cotton's List of Inscriptions on Tombs or Monumens in Madras on the Cyclone Monument in the Fort, Masulipatam, com
