1. Anyone heard of "Antioch"?? [1]
I post this message about twice a year - Has anyone ever found mention of a place called ANTIOCH in Jackson Co. ?? I ran across it in an old Brownstown Banner column - in reference to my grandfather's marriage: Clear Spring Sprinklings (Owen Twp), Brownstown Banner, Wed Oct 12, 1904 >"Mr. Samuel Hawkins and Miss Flossie Siglar were married at Brownstown last Monday >They have gone to house-keeping on the David Hawkins' farm at Antioch." Thanks...... Janet
2. Re: INJACKSO-D Antioch [1]
Antioch is often the name given a church; perhaps it's in a church's "neighborhood."
3. Probate recds [1]
I don't know where they are. I'll ask around and see if I can find out and let the list know where, why, and availability. Nancy

I found Antioch listed in these counties; Switzerland, Jay, Greene, Jefferson and Clinton. Perhaps it may not be safe to assume that the location mentioned was in Jackson county. I have found from reading the "100 Years Ago Today" column in the North Vernon Plain Dealer that many localities were mentioned that were NOT in Jennings county. This is the site I used http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/townco.cgi I am originally from Jackson Co., I don't recall an Antioch ever mentioned, but that doesn't mean
6. Reed Family in Brownstown [1]
Hi, I'm new to the list. Was just in Jackson county 2 weeks ago taking pictures in cemeteries until bad weather chased us out. I'm trying to find some information on my 3rd gr-grandparents Dr. Eldad P. Reed and wife Nancy Woody Reed. I do have a picture of their headstone in Fairview Cemetery. They are listed on the 1880 census and lived there until 1902 when both of them died. They lived in Lawrence county before coming to Jackson. Eldad born in 1827, died July 25, 1902 and Nancy born 1826, died Aug.
7. 1900 census-Henry Smith [1]
If someone has access to the 1900 census could you please look up a Henry T. Smith and wife Malinda? He may also have gone by Tally. I hope he's here, if not I will try Clark Co. Thanks so much! Pam
8. Research visit planned [1]
I am new to this list. I am planning a research visit to Jackson County the end of July. I have been trying to find what reseources are available, but there does not seem to be too much on the web. I would appreciate any assistance anyone may give me. I am planning on going to the Courthouse and Library in Seymour. What other resources are available? Is there any history of The Brownstown Banner? Names I am researching: BRODHECKER, hELLER, SEIDEL, SHAFFERMAN, SHEPARD, HOLMES, DURLAND,GOBLE, LUCAS
9. Re: Need Courthouse Street Address [1]
The courthouse and the Gen. Soc. are in Brownstown and it would be really tough to miss the courthouse. (unless it's been moved since May of last year when I was there) Maybe the library can give you the street address. The main branch of the Jackson County public library and the health department are in Seymour. I didn't know that there is a library in Brownstown. Brownstown is a much smaller town then Seymour and is about 20-30 mins from Seymour. There's a Jackson Co. Visitors Center in the Tangier Out

I'm frustrated. I can no longer open your attachments! Please try to resend this newslatter. I have been searching for my ggg grandmother, Emily Perry. Was she the daughter of David Perry who later moved to Monroe County. I would like to hear from anyone related to David and anyone related to Isaac and Lydia Scott, as well as Dorman and Susannah Bloss. All pioneered in Jackson County. 12. Re: INJACKSO-D Digest V03 #27 [1]
Gloria: This is taken from the research of John W. Hanneman; The Ruddick Family in America, 1993. Jesse Ruddick, son of William; born on October 4, 1819, Jackson Township, Jackson County, Indiana. He married on May 17, 1842 to Miss Matilda Findley, (born February 7, 1815, Indiana). She was the daughter of Honorable Judge Abel Findley, who came to Jackson County at an early day and settled on the original Ruddick land in Brownstown Township, where they became very prominent. They had nine children begin
13. Re: INJACKSO-D Antioch [1]
Thanks Cindy.........and all who have responded. I have two books published by the Indiana University Press. On is *Indiana Place Names* (publ. 1975) and the other is *Needmore to Prosperity - Hoosier Placenames in Folklore History* (publ 1995). The second one is a greatly updated version of the first. It also lists five - but one in Huntington Co. and none in Jefferson. (If I can look up an old Indiana name for anyone - let me know) I really don't think my grandfather lived anyplace but Jackson county aft
14. Wells - Owens, Jackson County [1]
Sorry if I had posted this before. I have received a marriage certificate from the State of Indiana for my gr-gr-gr-grandparents James Wells and Malinda Owens. James and Melinda were married in Jackson County, Indiana May 5, 1832. The marriage certificate had limited information on it and was wondering if anybody knew of another source maybe in Jackson County that would have additional records on their marriage. From Jackson County they moved to Clark County, Indiana and wound up in Sangamon County, Ill
15. Re: Research visit planned [1]
I think the courthouse is in Brownstown in Jackson co., IN. When I was there a few years ago, they were very nice and would make copies of records for a price. The drawers where the original records of estates and wills were kept, were on the wall and pretty high. You had to climb a ladder and pull the drawers out, which could be pretty precarious when you were up at the top. They do have records in the order books and other books, but those drawers contain a lot of info. I found receipts and signed affid

The records are in the old jail. The Court House is being remodeled. And also, a good place to go is the Genealogy Society. They are all with-in a few blocks of each other. The Courthouse is on your left as you go west on US 50 entering Brownstown. They are remodeling from what I've been told, so things may be moved around. 19. Need Courthouse Street Address [1]
As I will be driving to Jackson County, I want the street address for the Jackson County Courthouse. I have found it easier to find my way in a strange town if I have studied a city map ahead of time. The Brownstown Public Library is on E. Spring Street, and the Genealogical Society is on S. Poplar Street, but no address was given for the Courthouse. Also, the Jackson County Cicuit Court Clerk is listed as being in the Courthouse in Seymour. !!!! Penny Brown

21. Re: Need Courthouse Street Address [1]
My husband and I have been there at the Brownstown library and the one that we went to was not the town library but the genealogical library. They were in a white block building by themselves. I do not remember what the address is but do know that we passed the courthouse for a couple of blocks before we saw it. The public library there really does not have that much. The courthouse people were very helpful for looking up records. Some one at the library at Seymour told me about the society library at Brown
22. SMITH DNA test [1]
Requirements for the test are that you be a male Smith of direct Smith lines, as the test is a Y chromosome, male test. If you are not a male Smith, but have a relative that is a male Smith (ie, last name is Smith/Smyth/Smythe/Schmidt), consider asking that person to take the test as your representative. I might mention here that a number of female Smiths have expressed interest in taking the test, same thing goes to find a male kin representative. Information about the cost of the test and other concerns
