Folks,
I have very much enjoyed the conversations taking place lately about Lake
County and some of the memories that it has brought back for me although we
are a few thousand miles apart and I have never lived nor been to Lake
County, but I have family members that somehow made their way from Prince
Edward Island (the land of Anne of Green Gables) Canada to settle in Lake
County.
I hope this is not an intrusion, but I am trying to find out as much about
the area as I can and I noticed someone mention Cal
Hi Folks,
WOW!! what a wonderful group of people you all are. I have received more
information in the last 24 hours than I have been able to find on my own in
several years.
I am wondering if anyone knows if, with border changes, Calumet might have
been in Indiana in the mid to late 1800's.
Thanks very much,
Sandy in PEI

I lived on grand blvd as a kid for years and went to Winfield Elementary
School. It's neat how things come up when you are researching.

I sent this to the people at the ghost page, we'll see if they reply :) Oh
and on this page: http://www.midwestghosts.com/aboutus.html it shows a
picture of some of them at the "gypsie cemetery" and at Ross
cemetery...though the pics are dark and small so you cant see much.
This is what I wrote to them:

See, being on this email list has lots of perks! You are the first to view
the sneak preview we have online (as of 2 minutes ago) for Pictoral History

Kathy,
Great idea, count me on your bank wagon to help and plan and do anything to
organize.
I was born and breed in Lake County. Although I have moved to another
location the roots are very much alive. I visit as my family is still there.
Its ironic this came up because a sister and a brother who also have
relocated from Lake County have been talking about a get together for several
days in the area, designated strickly on genealogy.
Would love to brain storm this idea further.
Oh yea, one thing
I have really enjoyed reading your "memories" today. So much of what you've
all shared has made me homesick for LAKE COUNTY,IL where I spent my early
years---we even had a drive-in movie complete with a "back row" and
spot-light laden police officer. Thanks for the "memories"!

Hi, Sandy. I know what you mean about memories even though you have never
lived somewhere. I am on a Buffalo, NY, mailing list. I was born there but
have never lived there. When the listers go off on a memory spree I think
about my ancestors and what life may have been like for them.
I don't know of a town named "Calumet" around here. We have a "Calumet
City" in Illinois just across the street from Hammond, IN. If you want the
address for their city hall or other municipal building, drop me a note.

+Margaret Neibert
2. Henry Paulus b. Newton co IN (just south of Lake Co)

Just a note: Diana of the Dunes gravesite is located in Oak HIll Cemetery

As for this one...oyyyyshh! If you want to find out about Merrillville,
basically the biggest booming town of the county at present, put in the
search box Merriville (minus the two L's from the Merrill family name that
the town was named for) and you will find the page for it. Yes, the idiots at

Hello all!
I just added, by the submission of Ken Curtis, a page for the WPA records of
the 1918 Tax Assessment records of Lake County. These records will give you
the address of your ancestor in 1918, as well as other information such as
spouses name.
If you have any pages from this WPA book, consider typing it up in Notepad
and sending it for inclusion on this new feature of the Lake Co GenWeb!

Hello List Members,
Ghost stories are fun, but the real stories of our ancestors and the lives they
lived are also important. Along with the Poles, Germans, etc., Gypsies migrated
to the NW Indiana area. The first Gypsies probably came to the U.S. during the
1600's. My Gypsy ancestors came to Indiana during the 1880's and were Croatian
immigrants Croatia was a constituent republic of Yugoslavia (in the NW part).
There are reportedly still thousands of Gypsies in Yugoslavia today.

Empress is in Hammond/Robertsdale. Near 5 points, they took down the lever
bros. box on corner to put up a ramp to get there. Spoiled the waterworks
hill where we used to watch Whiting's 4th of July fireworks.(marina did
that) I'm going up there soon to see what it looks like. Only been to a boat
once--trump and majestic star in buffington. Don't see where it has improved
the area, except for money cities have gotten, we have alot of new sidewalks
in Crown Point thanks to the boats, also streets fixed.
