J. T. Simmons, a farmer of Marion township, this county, found a dead
baby in an unused barn on the farm of Squire McDonald. He had got
permission of McDonald a few days since to use the barn, but when he
attempted to put one of his horses in it the horse refused to enter.
This caused him to make a thorough search of the barn with the above
result. Suspicion points to an unmarried (*next line unreadable) few
days ago she was seen in

Died on Sunday, February 27, B. F. Brinegar, at this home near this
place. Deceased was in the fifty-ninth year of his age. He has been a
life long resident of this place. He served in both the Mexican and late
war. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his absence. He was a
member of no church, but believed in the immortality of his soul:
"There is no death; the stars go down,
To rise upon some fairer shore,
And bright in heaven

Death of J. T. Hummell.
John T. Hummell, who was well known in our community died at his
residence in East Bedford at 10 o'clock Friday night.
He was born in Greene county, New York, March 14, 1832. He was twice
married. He was married to his first wife, by whom he had four children
in 1850; his wife dying in -----. He was married in 1876 to Sarah E.
McMorris, who is left to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband.

A young man by the name of Thomas Martin was drowned at Fort Ritner on
last Tuesday while in White river bathing. It required a search of three
hours to find his body.

Henry Kissell, aged sixteen, of Evansville, was struck on the head by a
falling limb Saturday, while chopping a tree for fire wood. It was
thought only a slight wound until the next evening, when he was suddenly
taken sick, and died in a few minutes. His skull had bee fractured.

MITCHELL.
A little eight year old daughter of Van Wray met with an accident last
week which resulted in her death. She was playing in the yard with
Bertha, the little daughter of J. L. Dodson. Bertha Dodson had a butcher
knife and by some means in running around the house they ran together,
the knife penetrating the abdomen making a wound from which the
intestines protruded. Several doctors were called who did all they could

J. M. Grimes, editor of the Jasper (Ind.) Times, passed through
Louisville Sunday. He had just returned from a tour over the ground at
Eckerty, Perry county, Ind., where the man John Davis was hanged on the
charge of having outraged Ella Flanagan. He says that it is now known
that John Davis was not guilty of the crime and died at the hands of the
lynchers an innocent man. His brother, Clay Davis, who made the assault,

Herb. Brock, who has been very low with consumption at the residence of
his parents in northwest Bedford, died last Wednesday night. He leaves a
wife and child, father and mother, brothers and sisters, and a host of
friends to mourn his untimely departure.

Death visits our young as well as old. Jennie Whitter, after a long
suffering, departed this life August 10th, 1889, with that terrible
disease consumption. She bore her sufferings patiently and was ready to
go where she was called. Jennie was a great girl and was loved by all
who knew her, if she had an enemy we never heard of it. Here remains
were interred in the graveyard near the Lee school house, and were

Capt. Isaac Newkirk was born in Lawrence county, Indiana, near Leesville,
April 20th, 1822, and died in Bedford, Ind., Feb. 29th, 1892. He united
with the M. E. church in early life and remained a faithful member till
death. April 23, 1845, he was married to Miss Elizabeth J. Milligan.
This union was blessed with four children, two of whom with the mother

Rev. John D. Hight, D. D., assistant editor of the Western Christian
Advocate, died at his home in Cincinnati last Saturday. He was born in
Monroe County, this State, and was one of the most prominent ministers in
the Methodist conference.

On last Saturday a sad telegram was received here, from Nebraska,
announcing the death of Henry Wray, a young man who was raised in this
community. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Wray, and was in his 21st
year. Henry was an enterprising young man, of reputable character, kind
and affectionate to all who knew him, and dearly loved by his brothers,
sisters and loving parent (his mother having already gone before.) He

BURNED TO DEATH
INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 3 A special to the Daily News from Loogootee, Martin
county, Ind., says that at 3 o'clock this morning the Ackerman Hotel, a
two-story frame building, was burned and three men perished in the
flames. They were forgotten in the excitement until it was too late to
save them. Two of them were John G. Gates and Michael Tracey, who were
yesterday elected Treasurer and Auditor, respectively, of Martin county.
