The Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery at 42nd & Millersroad, behind the current
Baptist Church (old Ebenezer Lutheran) is in dire need of help on the
tombstones!
Several of the tombstones have been knocked over or damaged over the years.
Many of the stones are for burials from 1727-early 1900's.
Most of the families there are from Frederick County, Maryland-New Harmony,
IN to Lawrence.
Familes included are: Bower, Brown, Easterday, Mowrey, Shartz(s), Ringer,

BlankI need some help if I can get it.
In 1898 directly across the street from 1450 Spruce St. was a German Protestant Orphans Home. Is it still there? probably a dumb question. Was it there in 1918? Would anyone have the faintest idea where to look for records from this Home?
Any help speculation or down right lies would be a help at this time.

The funeral of Oscar W. Ray took place at Anderson last Wednesday.
He committed suicide recently at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, after an

hey Robert, someone at the Indiana Historical Society sent me two forms:
Form 47896 (R/4-97) and Form 47897 (R/4-97), the first one is for
identifying information, and the second is for non-identifying information.
You can submit both forms to obtain information about your ancestor(s) who
were adopted in Indiana, prior to Jan 1. 1994.
The Indiana State Department of Health is the creator of these forms, and
the return address on the forms is:

Can you tell me where to get the paperwork. If I am correct
and the adoption proves the person is not blood related does
that mean that I cannot get the records?

Happy 2000 listers ...
I'm searching for descendants of a Peter Gates, who married my
g.grandfather's sister, Elizabeth Surber. The marriage took place in
Shelby County, IN 8-18-1836. The husband's name was listed as Peter
"Gates or Getts." By 1870 they were spelling the name GATES. Peter is
believed to have been of German-speaking Swiss ancestry, as was
Elizabeth.
By 1850, Elizabeth "GETTS" appears in the MARION County IN census as a
head of household. For various reasons, I know this to be the same

My husbands parents are both dead. We sent to IN to get his birth
certificate and what came back was a 1/2 sheet of paper--all typed with ONLY
the name of the parents, the state of their birth, and my husbands name and
birth date. Is this normal for IN? All birth certificates I have seen have
the age of parents, their birth dates, their occupation, hospital where
child was born, etc. In other words, there is usually a lot of genealogy
info on the birth cert. We have sent to both the state of IN as well
Does anyone know if the original 'Justice of the Peace' and 'Surveyor'
records would still exist somewhere for Lawrence & Washington Townships?
A Daniel Shartz(s) was Justice of the Peace in Lawrence Township & his
son William Sharts was Surveyor for Washington Township.
Am looking for further information on these men!
Thank you for your help.

I'm interested in finding an index of land records for Marion County
(specifically the city of Indianapolis). Would someone please let me
know what office I should write to for this information? I'm unfamiliar
with Indiana's govt. structure....does each county have a Registrar of
Deeds or is it handled by another office? Any help appreciated.

Elijah Walker HALFORD was my great-uncle, born in England (1843),
emigrated to Hamilton, Ohio as a child (1848), and grew to adulthood in
Indianapolis, Indiana (1880 Federal Census). Among his papers in the
Library of Congress is a letter to his sister Maria Ann (m. John

I need lots of help in answering questions about this tragedy.
Let me summarize the tale told in the letter. (Email me if youd like a

Lynda,
I got the same type of birth certificates for my grandchildren when I went
to the Oregon vital records office here in Portland. I asked the clerk if
they didn't put "all" information on the certificates anymore. He told me
that those were the "long" forms and I would have to ask for the "long" form
if that was what I wanted. Maybe it's the same in IN - it's worth a try!

Hi Robin:
I just saw your listing on the Marion County site about the Tate,
Klepfer Cemetery. I am related to some of the Klepfers that are buried
there. I have not been to the cemetery. I live in California. I had
intended to go the last time I was bzck in Indiana, but did not get
there.
Are you in contact with a Ralph (think that is his first name) Klepfer?
One of the sources that I received Klepfer information from had met with
him and went to the cemetery quite a few years ago.

Hello all,
Just a quick note to let you know that the Rafert Family Webpage is now
online at www.rafert.org. The family was predominately in the
Indianapolis area, be sure to check out the surname page. These pages
are just being built so be sure to check back for further updates. If
you have a connect to this family or have any questions/comment be sure
to drop me a line.

Hi Robert,
Your address caught my attention -- my grandparents lived at 1434 Spruce
for many years, and other family members lived in the Fountain Square area!
If I remember correctly, the area across the street and directly east is
vacant. I believe it forms a triangular lot bordered by Pleasant Run
Parkway and Spruce Street. Your ggp's may have lived on Pleasant Run
Creek, which runs alongside the Parkway. I'd be glad to take a picture
when I visit Indy next -- but it probably won't be until February
Sorry to interrupt, but is this Frank Johnson the one who died ca 1895, and is buried in Crown HIll Cem? Possibly married to Molly Caldwell?
