1. [IOWA] P O Mail Boxes/residentual [1]
I also have a P O Box. But don't have a mail box outside at my residence. I have a P O Box as too many ch. get into mail boxes in a lot of area's. The P O will not put any mail I would get into my P O Box unless it has the P O Box number on it even if it has the rresidence address on it. THEY SEND IT BACK to sender. Even tho I live in a small town and they know I have a P O Box. It must be new regulations as some people move and keep their P O Box and don't tell the P O they moved as they get their mai

I missed the original post, but I have read several that said they wanted the 1930 census. You can add me to the list. Genrtrd@aol.com
3. [IOWA] Daylight savings [1]
Yes, I seem to remember that DST was started during the war to save on fuel, an energy conservation program. That is still a good reason to keep it. There are other advantages, especially in rural communities, such as children aren't standing out in the dark waiting for the school bus and the farm animals wanted to be tended too when it gets light. DST put the nonfarm community on the same timetable as the farmers.

5. [IOWA] ancestry.com [1]
I have gotten lots of great information from ancestry.com and use it all the time. They also have old books like "Prominent Men of Iowa" written in 1897, which has detailed profiles on a lot of Iowans at that time and would cost at least $300 to buy.

7. Re: [IOWA] Social Security Application [1]
If you are getting that quick of a turn around time then I guess SSA has achieved their goal of discouraging the number of requests by increasing the price last year from $7.00 to $27.00 per copy. It used to take about 8-12 weeks to get a reply. 10. [IOWA] Andy Gaylord- Clayton County [1]
Thanks to much help from you great Iowa listers, I think I have zeroed in on my grandfather, Andy Gaylord. I really need help to authenticate his name. I still cannot find his legal-given name. Based on an uncle of his who died at 19 in the Civil War, I think that it may have been "Alexander", but cannot rule out "Andrew" or "Andre". The family moved to Nebraska in 1872 where on the 1880 census, he is listed as "Anda". Any help locating a birth, census or church record from the time and area of his bi
11. [IOWA] My method of printing Ancestry.com's images [1]
I use IE and perhaps this is the difference, but I have a much simpler way to print: I open up the full screen, in detail mode. Then I click to magnify to about the right size to read, then I switch to the hand symbol, found at the top left of the screen. This lets you pull the page around and look at all of it. When I have found the folks I want to print out, I < right > click on the image. This brings up the choice print image and also the option save image. I choose print image and then there are

13. Re: [IOWA] Comments from a Ancestry.com Subscriber [1]
Pam, I get a full page printout of the census image by using the "Landscape" feature for printing instead of "Portrait". I can read this well enough to highlight the lines my people are on and read most of the information. As an aid for fast reading later and so I can read the small printing at the heading of each column I also download forms for the census from Ancestry and transcribe the information onto those. I always make sure that I put the Ancestry Image number on this form along with all the cens

Thank you Leslie, I am looking for Mahaska CO mortality and unfortunatly my local library does not have that index. My local LDS hours are not regular any more, to make it easy to get to either. Robin Robin, You should be able to find the mortality index at major libraries that carry the census of the all the years of Iowa. Some of the individual counties have transcribed them, and put them out as well. I know Louisa Co. GenWeb has theirs available on the internet, as well as other years. I'm sure s
