Immigration dates are found on the 1900 census.
I am very sorry to read all of the posts about having trouble finding
records in Iowa.
I feel that I should mention that some records may be lost. Several of the
early courthouses were lost to fire. Of course, those records were lost,
too. I am experiencing this problem when I try to find certain records from
Virginia. Most of what I'm looking for were burned by the British during the
War of 1812. Lost. Gone forever. (I do know they were there, though. Found
one lone tax roll dated 1800.)
Another fact of
The actual scanned image clearly says: Kitty, white, female, age 9,
daughter, single, attended school within past year, born IL. Does the
grandmother's will specifically list "Kit" as a child of this William Moore?
Perhaps there was another grandchild named "Kit", i.e. a cousin of "Kitty."?
Of course your suspicion that the enumerator made an error is very possible
also. I think I would try finding a listing of the birth in IL in 1871 as a
means of determining the sex of the child. Also check the local
Can anyone tell me how long plat books have been around and when they 1st were made? Also what other states have/had these? I have one that is for 1917 and one or two other ones for a earlier years.
Thanks.

Dear Rea,
Some counties obviously do have records as witness - Warren county, IA had
this divorce of my great great aunt in the year 1878 as well as many other
court items - this lady was in court a lot! Total of 4 husbands. Outlived
2! One divorce, one desertion. Hard life!

If a son was born, the dad died, the mom remarried, and was supposed to have changed the son's name, where would the record be at to document this? In the state where the son was born, or where they lived? Perhaps, the fellow she married to adopted the son, therefore the name change.

Thanks Phyllis for this helpful information. I just want to add another
reason that the records might not be found, either by the staff in
courthouse or anyone searching the original records .......... they weren't
recorded at all. For example, found one family I was searching only
recorded the male children, not the females.

I've always had a terrible time getting vital records from IA. Am I doing
something wrong or is the system hopelessly lacking? On June 11th, I sent

David Davidson, d. 10 Aug 1898

There are many valid points on the Nuclear issue, none of which
should be aired on this site. Doing so will only discourage serious
Iowa researchers from using the site for family search matters.

Just a guess, but how about Marion?
I'm thinking that someone familiar with the more regular languages, unlike
English, would assoicate Marion and Marius as different forms of the same
noun.

One more suggestion, could Mareus maybe be a surname, meaning he was going
to stay with the Mareus Family in Iowa?

I have Danish ancestors and I don't know if the name is male or female. I 1st look for the spouse and sometimes I can go by that name; but sometimes I come across that both names are foreign to me. It was done by my aunt and she is at the point of not too sure o
