1. [IOWA] Shellabarger or Blake [1]
I would like to know if anyone has information on Viola Alice Shellabarger who supposedly was born in Harlan, Shelby in 1884 and married Wilbur Booth in 1902 in Avoca, Pottawattamie Co. She had a sister named Myrtle. I would like to know their parents. They probably aren't connected with the Shellabargers of Louise Co. Also I would like to get information of the Samuel Blake family. He was born in 1832 in Canada. I believe he was in Blakeburg, Wapello Co. fo a short while, but went to Harlan. I hav

4. Re: [IOWA] Fwd: Iowa Genealogy Records at Risk!!! [1]
Good Luck to anyone that can stir historical interest in the state of Iowa, it isn't easy! In Des Moines we are working on the Iowa Events Center, Science Center, Library, Gray's Lake, Principal Riverwalk, Year-around Market, Gateway Projects . . . and getting anything historic included is worse then pulling teeth! If we can get the Market to have an historical appearance (lights, benches, etc.) we will feel like we have won a battle. Getting $70,000 to start restoring the birthplace cabin has been VERY
5. Re: [IOWA] womens surnames-marriage [1]
i don't know about other states, but in illinois, you can keep your maiden name when you marry....i didn't the first time i married but the second time i married i kept my first husbands last name and thats the name i still use and will continue to use...i never had to do anything, as long as my lic and social security card are in the correct name...i sometimes think as far as genealogy goes it would be easier if all women kept their maiden names.......Debbie >From: "Catherine Furlich"

8. Re: [IOWA] Jewish Naming Patterns [1]
Helene and Judy, I hope you don't mind if I jump in here a bit. The name translation information below comes from "The New Name Dictionary: Modern English and Hebrew Names" by Alfred J. Kolatch. Simcha or Simha is an actual Hebrew name. It can be either masculine or feminine. You are right, Helene, the meaning is "joy". Zev is a variant spelling of Ze'ev. The name comes from Hebrew and means "wolf." Wolf or Wolfe. This name comes from Anglo-Saxon and means "wolf", connoting strength. Mikha
9. [IOWA] Maiden Name [1]
Kathy wrote <> When I married in 1976, I kept my maiden name. When you marry, you "assume" the husband's name when you begin to use it--such as signing the marriage record and changing your SS record. To keep your maiden name, you sign the marriage register with your maiden name and don't change any records! It's really quite simple. the only glitch I encountered---and it was minor--was when I applied f
10. [IOWA] DUBUQUE [1]
I'll try again and see if anyone has the Anderson family in their tree. In the 1870-80 census in DUBUQUE they are listed as C.R.Anderson wife Sarah. He was born in MIchigan and she in New York. The first 5 children born in N.Y. Last 2 in Iowa. I'm interested in Charles Born in 1854. Thanks June

15. Re: [IOWA] Notorious Uncle [1]
I remember as a child in the 1930's in Iowa, my father and uncle laughing about the KKK burning a cross in my uncle's yard. I certainly wish I had listened to that story but I have no idea what he might have done (except being Irish Catholic) to have caused this. In later years my father mentioning that on Mondays the clothes lines of certain neighbors would have the robes hanging on them. Somehow I have never been able to consider members of the KKK as 'well-intentioned." Larry W. Gamble wrote: > > A

18. Re: [IOWA] divorce [1]
From what I have learned ( as sexist as this sounds) Divorce was invented by Jewish men. I was watching that 4 hour special on the history of christianity on A and E cable channel. And in pre christian times the Patriarchs of Judaism came up with a way to stop murder. Mostly it was a problem with men murding their wives. Occasionally it was the other way around but mostly the men were doing the killing. Well murder was punishable by death and the law makers came up with a way to prevent this, Divorce.

Hello, I did get 1850 Fayette county census finally last night. Will try to go up line tonight time permitting. There is a few missing in VT. But by and large I think they do not scan them right. But who am I. I am interested in the Wolf's and Nichols in Fayette and Blackhawk Clayton. Who knows maybe ol George Johnson. Ancestry does seem to have problems wanting the money before the data. There is a glitch there, I have sent enough money, More Than my share. It beats going out of house at night. Enuf said,

Debby J. inquired on 17 MAY 2002 about Grove, Iowa. I just discovered an excellent map of Cass County, Iowa that listed the Townships and Towns in the County.
