12. [IOWA] Re: Civil War Pension Records - Archives [1]
That's right....my gr grandfather served in the Civil War with the Illinois troops, as did his 18-yr. old son. He was given a medical discharge after he was in the Army for about 3 yrs., but was unable to get a pension. I hadn't tried to see if his 18-yr. old son had any kind of benefits as I know he was killed in battle just a couple weeks before the war ended. He was unmarried and I figured there'd be no one to claim a pension. One day I decided to request his military pension records anyway and

My grand-aunt died in a RR accident while taking a shortcut across a RR Trestle. I didn't know exactly the date that she died, but found her by: 1) Renting a Vital Statistic Film for BlackHawk Co.,IA for years 1885-1925 through the LDS (Mormon) Family History Centers, and 2) Writing a letter to the current newspaper in the area (newer newspapers tend to buy up older newspapers and keep the old vintage newspapers on film for referral) and asking them for any obits on an Accident in that time period. Susan, Some sugguestions: Check the Civil War pension records in the National Archives. If he didn't get one, check anyway as his widow may have applied for a pension after his death. The affidavits required from his widow will give details about where and when he died. If you know the IA regiment and company he served, check the Civil War records in the Archives @ the Iowa State Historical Library as they have many. What records told you he died in Kansas?
