He got this air out of the night.
Strange noises were heard
By others who followed, bits of a tune
Coming in on loud weather
Though nothing like melody.
He blamed their fingers and ear
As unpractised, their fiddling easy
For he had gone alone into the island
And brought back the whole thing.
The house throbbed like his full violin.
So whether he calls it spirit music
Or not, I don't care. He took it
Out of wind off mid-Atlantic,

THE DEAD AT CLONMACNOIS
In a quiet water'd land, a land of roses,
Stands Saint Kieran's city fair:
And the warriors of Erin in their famous generations
Slumber there.
There beneath the dewy hillside sleep the noblest
Of the clan of Conn,
Each below his stone with name in branching Ogham
And the sacred knot thereon.
There they laid to rest the seven Kings of Tara,
There the sons of Cairbre sleep --
Battle-banners of the Gael, that in Kieran's plain of crosses
Now their final hosting keep.
And in Clonmacn

SHE WALKED UNAWARE
O, she walked unaware of her own increasing beauty
That was holding men's thoughts from market to plough,
As she passed by, intent on her womanly duties
And she without leisure to be wayward or proud;
Or if she had pride then it was not in her thinking
But thoughtless in her body like a flower of good breeding.
The first time I saw her spreading coloured linen
Beyond the green willow she gave me gentle greeting
With no more intention than the leaning willow tree.
Though she smiled witho

I have recently found that there is a reference to two Mortimer Shaughnessy's in
the NY Passenger Lists 1820-1957. I would appreciate it greatly if
there is some kind soul out there who would do a look up for me please.

SNIPPET: In the late 19th century, a group of Harvard alumni, mainly lawyers
and scholars, had founded the Immigration Restriction League. It was the
first official anti-immigrant organization, and one of its central tenets
appears to have been the superiority of the white race. Its practical goal
was to push the federal government to create legislation that would limit
the number of new immigrants to the United States. But the first decade of
the new century saw the influx of unprecedented numbers of

The Irish contribution to the material development
of America is best illustrated in a practical way
by the following facts:
The first daily newspaper in America, 1784, the
"Pennsylvania Packet" was edited and printed by
John Dunlap, of Philadelphia, born in Strabane,
County Tyrone, 1747, came to America in early
youth.
First American writer on Political Economy,

THE LAKE ISLE OF INNISFREE
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of linnet's wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day

SNIPPET: The county of Offaly is best known for its stretches of bogland
and for its wild Slieve Blooms, which, rare for Irish mountains, are not
close to the sea. It is also the site of "St. Kieran's City" at Clonmacnois,
on the banks of the Shannon, where the impressive remains of a large and
significant monastic settlement, dating from 545 AD, describe a time when it
was the centre of Celtic learning, literature and art, an era when most of
the rest of Europe was being engulfed by the barbarian in
