Wished I lived in the Chicago area to take advantage of the Diocese Archives. A museum, WOW! The Cleveland OH Diocese Archives are closed to public use. The have a very small staff who try to keep up with the demands but in general it can take months and many nudges to get a response. Wish they would be open to volunteers but not aware they are. How lucky you are.!
If you do get a chance to assist and research there, please tell us about it. Also, would it be a feasible stop or dr

Hello Listers
Yesterday I received a little treasure trove of goodies from St. Gabriels
parish from my aunt.
I need to do some scanning and indexing, but Ill give you all a bit of a
holiday treat.
Following is the list of initial inductees to the St. Gabriels Hall of
Fame, inducted Dec. 30, 1990,
on the occasion of Father Carl McNerneys retirement.
There is a = page of information about each inductee; some have genealogical
information,
most just list their professional accomplishments.
I'm at Wabash and the river and am planning to go. I'll be looking for you Nan.

Is anyone on the list connected with Chicago Ronans, Haydens, or Keegans?
These families would have come from Co. Carlow, Wicklow, or Wexford
somewhere between 1850 and 1890.
Hayden, Pierce - came from Ireland around 1850 - 1860. He married Mary Gaul
who came to Chicago around 1855 to 1860. I found them in the 1860 St. Mary
parish book as baptismal sponsors in 1860.
Keegan - I know very little about them, or when they came to Chicago. I
think that a Michael Keegan married a Catherine Hic

Jim,
There are 230 articles in the Tribune on Chiniquy from about 1856
thru the 1880s.
There seemed to be an anti Catholic bias on the Tribune's part. It
seems there was
anti-Irish sentiment on Chiniquy's part,too.
I thought you would find this one of interest:

I think the problem may be terminology. Cardinal Stritch was the head of the
Catholic Church in Chicago from 1940 until 1958. He was Archbishop from 1940
until 1946 when he was elevated to the rank of Cardinal.
John Cardinal Meyer succeeded him as Archbishop in 1946.
