1. New Clonegal RC parish records [1]
Michael, My thanks also to the lister who took all that time to transcribe the RC parish at Clonegal and offer them to the list - what a gift!!!!! I was able to follow the names in the family over the years to see that those names eventually died out in the town where they lived - and to see the few family surnames left by the beginning of the 1900s. - whether due to many females in the family or families moving elsewhere. I did find 3 of my ggrandmother's siblings in the records; I had paid
2. RE: [IRL-CARLOW] Irish Naming Patterns [1]
Hi Roger and everyone - Just had to comment on the naming pattern. I think many of the Irish went by their middle names - not only those named Joseph and Mary. Two of my cousins, James Nolan and Edward Nolan were known to everyone as Jim and Ed. Growing up I knew that Jim's name was really Merton James, the Merton after his father but it wasn't until a couple of years ago when I saw Ed and he was talking about the Nun in school who insisted on calling him Thomas that I realized that he also was named f
3. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Irish Naming Patterns [1]
On a census record I once saw a family with 22 children -- the parents must have been good Roman Catholics because all the girls were named Mary and all the boys were named Joseph. Middle names served to distinguish, as in Mary Elizabeth, Mary Ann, and Joseph James and Joseph John, etc. They were no relation so I did not copy the record and do not remember the surname. I wish now I had made a copy because I thought it quite amazing. Shirley (in Maine and Florida) On Mon, 07 Aug 2006 17:16:03 -03

9. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Topic - DONATIONS? [1]
Michael, I've found that technique to be extremely helpful. It is, in fact, very respectful in the sense that priests and others who hold genealogical information frequently receive many queries. This is a small thank you for their time and effort, certainly often more symbolic than of any major material substance but it is the thought that counts. I've always sent a check (adjusting the amount to cover the expected charge at the receivers bank) and it's always worked well. Also I usually send

Thanks everyone for your very positive replies so far. Unfortunately I cannot comment on Cherie's points regarding 'CHARGES' as I have not experienced having to change currency received from another country, (I'm not that lucky!). If there is there anyone who knows more about sending Hard Cash and IMO's to Ireland please advise us through the List as soon as possible please. 11. DONATIONS-CHARLIE AND LISTERS [1]
At the risk of being smacked Why havent you joined the Irish tombstone or cemetary list and said what headstones you need? its not the suggestion of what one's money is or is not worth but what time the person has available to go looking for these things one desires. I am not answering this simply to you Charlie but to all of those who write to parish clergymen, requesting that they take the time to look in their registers for the missing links we seek, those men or in these days also women, with gr

These are lovely! (Oh to be in Ireland . . . .) My gg grandmother, Eliza GALLAGHER lived in this area. We visited several years ago. I'll have to dig up my pictures, tho I think Tom's turned out better. Today, I visited the town where she and my gg grandfather settled and raised their children. The town is 150 years old. (That is old to some of us Americans.) I loaned some photos of my family, for the local history display, which included her and her brother James. They, along with another sister, emigrate
14. Queries etc [1]
Hi everyone As you can imagine I get quite a number of requests about people and places which are featured on the Carlow website which I welcome very much and I enjoy doing the ground work because it takes me in all sorts of new directions which I may not have discovered before. The one thing that would help me enormously with all queries is that you insert the website page link of the page that you are referring to at the time. Just copy and paste it to the email from the address window and I will
15. Re: [IRL-CARLOW] Kavanaugh- Aclare [1]
Shirley - remember that ages were often fudged on such records as these ship's records. A child (I believe under age 12) sailed for less, so parents often listed false ages for their offspring. I don't know if this sailing (New Ross/Quebec) involved a stop at Grosse Ile, but I think after a certain date all ships from Ireland stopped there for inspection, quarantine. I have looked for siblings James and Margaret Kavanagh (great-grandfr and great-aunt to my husband) in Griffiths Val. from Cos.Carlow, Wexfo

18. Irish Clergy [1]
Thanks Cara very well put. If I could just add to Cara's note below. In Ireland - the Irish Clergy (as far as I am aware) do not have secretaries doing their office admin work; they have to find the time in their busy schedule to answer all the many correspondence they receive each day. And neither are they computerised. Everything is still hand written (as far as I am aware). Hi Cara and all, Thanks for the offer Cara and I hope I haven't complained here about any lack of cooperation from anyone esp. the clergy, as I have nothing but praise for the unbelievable help I have received from them. Now Cara if you happen to be in Myshall I would really appreciate any grave marker photos of Donohoe's and Mahan's from there.
