I found James Cranston in County Cavan on the 1796 Flax Growers list. I'm curious if anyone on the list has come across any other references to him or his family. I am hypothesizing that:
(1) he is the James who was the son of Andrew Cranston, gentleman, which would make him the brother of Rev. John Cranston and nephew of Archdeacon John Cranston, both of Co. Monaghan, and
(2) he is the father of John Cranston who emigrated to the U.S. in 1802, because the latter's first-born son was also named James, and
You can save Patricia a little work by checking for names at Ancestry.com before you contact her. Their index of the Spinning Wheel (Flax) list has a search form at . You can enter first and last names and the county (in this case, Cavan). You will get a response listing the number of "hits" in the database (you will need to be a member of Ancestry.com to get any more information than that). If you get zero or many hits, you don't fall within her criteria fo

Hi, everyone,
I'm collecting any info I can find on the DENNENY surname. I'm in touch
with several other researchers, and we are all working together, sharing our
info. Several Denneny families immigrated to NYC, then on to Providence, RI.
Here's the DENNENYs I'm looking for:

+ Margaret ???
2... William Denneny, b. 1837, d. 1915
immigrated to NYC in 1860

Spinning-wheel Premium Entitlement Lists
The government wished to encourage the linen trade, so it gave free
spinning-wheels, or looms, to people who planted "a certain area of land
with flax". About 60,000 people were entitled to the premium. The list of
those entitled was published in 1796. The info available from the list is

Hello Patricia,
Thank you for your generous offer. I too hope that you do not regret it.
I'd like to know if any Fergusons of the parish of Ballymachugh are on
the Spinning Wheel List for Co. Cavan for 1796.

I have been very happy to see how much people have been helping each other
on IRL-CAVAN-L. It's really what I envisioned before setting up the list.
I do have a general comment to make. When there is a look-up offer or
someone gives a link (URL) for information, etc, they are sharing all of
the information they have. If they have more they are willing to share,
I'm quite sure they will post to the list. For example, I recently posted
a look-up for my book "Irish Families Great and Small", but that does

Since this is a County Cavan genealogy matter, I thought I'd share it with my
fellow Cavan-listers along with my KILROY searchers.
Any and all assistance greatly appreciated.

Alison, welcome to the list and to the "ultimate challenge"--research in
Ireland! Be warned, it is extremely difficult, because many records were
destroyed.
One of the best things you can do is get yourself a good book, such as John
Grenham's Tracing Your Irish Ancestors. It will tell you what records exist
and how to use them. You can also read about Irish records at

The microfiche of the Co. Cavan Townland/Parish Maps requires the use of a

Thank you for mentioning the bug and white lines in FTM 6.0. I was

Our FHC has a film of Spinning Wheel Premiums on indefinate loan. However,
I haven't figured it out yet :-) I had a bunch of LEDDY names I had gotten
from the database at http://www.ancestry.com and wanted to see what info

The info on the film was minimal. It was separated into counties, then

I'm brand new to this list, having just learned that my Great Grandmother and
Great Great Grandmother were born in Cavan. Don't know my GGGrandmothers
maiden name, but her married name was Ann KILROY, b. 1775 in County Cavan [I
learned this from her gravestone, just located this past weekend]. Also
don't know her husband's name nor town nor parish. Am interested in help in
finding such information where the KILROY's might have been in residence some
200 + years ago. Daughters name was Margaret, b.
