Before we get carried away here, let's look at a few facts:
1. The Irish never had tartans (plaids) by family name. That is a Scottish
invention.
2. The traditional Irish kilts were solid colors (red, green, blue,
saffron, etc.).
3. Plaids were available in Ireland, but only those who could afford them,

Hi,
My g-grandfather was a BARNETT, had red hair, as do I, and is said he was Irish. His wife was a McMURRY.
Does anybody know if the BARNETTs or McMURRYs have any associations with any of the Irish clans? I'm trying to trace my BARNETT and McMURRY roots in Ireland. At this point I know very little about my family's heritage in Ireland, but I hope to remedy that.
Thanks,
Don Byars

No. There is no significance to the colors used.
In most cases, people used whatever colors were available in their area.
Saffron seems to be the most preferred and most significant of the Irish.
