The word "Range" was commonly used to denote a row of row
housing, BUT usually it carried an owner's name, such as
'Garvey's or Hall's Range'. Garryowen is in the civil

Here are two replies I received from a man who lives in Ireland. I joined
the Limerick list so I could learn more about Garryowen. It sounds like
the name of the TOWNLAND is Limerick City, the name of the CIVIL PARISH is
St. John's, the name of the AREA is Garryowen, and the name of the CATHOLIC
PARISH is also St. John's (cathedral), ( and we are missing the exact name
of the range). I'm going to write to him and ask him what info is
contained in the 1901 census.
First email:

Hourigan (b. 1850, St. John's R. C. church). My g-grandfather Thomas Hanley was
one of five children born to Thomas Hanley and Catherine O'Connor, my
g-grandmother Bridget was the daughter of Michael Hourigan and Elizabeth Kennedy.
Michael and Elizabeth were married at St.

I don't know any Dalton/Horan families, but I'm looking for the family of

It is very doubtful and not at all likely that the baptism
certificate from St. Mary's RC, Limerick city is for the
man from Glin, Co.Limerick, unless, of course, his parents
moved to Glin after his birth - but I wouldn't bet on that.
Whoever is offering the look-ups won't find him either, as
the monumental inscriptions that he has are for the
opposite side (east) of the county , in the Lough Gur area.

Garryowen , is a townland within the city and a part of
St.John's civil and both of the ecclesiastical parishes -
R.C., and C. of I. I don't know which D.E.D., would apply
to a particular road or lane, and one needs to know that,
or otherwise have to check all the film numbers for the
1901 census of St.John's civil parish, which are:
D.E.D 59/1-2 #842855 ; DED 60/1-12 #846486 ;
DED 62/1-29 #846489 ; DED # 66/1-43 #846491

I do not know how families get their burial plots in Ireland. However, from
my own family experience, the county council, appears to have some type of
control over them. If there are Protestant only and Catholic grave yeards
only, I don't know either. But all the listers who have walked the various
cemeteries in Ireland, probably will note that at certain times of the year they
are neatly cut and at other times (especially the more rural ones) the grass
is high. Commenting on this years ago
Dear All, We are researching the Hughes family from the Knockpatrick, Foynes
area. Our initial information goes back to John Hughes Born approx 1827. He
joined the army in 1845. we have a copy of his army papers, stating he came
from the parish of Newcastle near Newcastle. We also have a letter sent to his
son John Joseph in 1895 from a Catherine Mangan. In it she asks for his safe
return to Ireland and it was sent from Knockpatrick. If anyone out there
connects we would like to hear from them.
