1. [MON] Livingstone - The Monaghan Story [1]
Does anyone have the Monaghan Story? It is quite expensive on the used market, and my local library cannot seem to locate an appropriate participating interlibrary loan library that has it either. I would buy it if it contains the information for which I am looking. I want to know two (perhaps three) things: 1. Is the family Doonan mentioned? 2. In The Fermanagh Story, there is a list of erenaghs together with their churches; does the Monaghan Story have a similar list? If so, who is listed for a

Pat: Thanks. Hmmm, I do not know how common the name Traynor is, but it seems appropriate that a Traynor would tell me that Traynors were erenagh of Donagh in Monaghan. Do you know more about this? I will have to get a copy of this book, though it is very hard to get here in the US. >> I have the erenach list from the Fermanagh Story that lists Doonan as >> erenach of Donagh. Thank you, yes, I have this. Essentially I am trying to show that a atatement made in the 1850's by a normally reliable source
4. [MON] Willoughby/Ramsey/Armstrong [1]
I am researching a group of Willoughby siblings who moved together from Ireland to Upper Canada aka Ontario about 1827. My ancestors were John Willoughby (1793-1874) and his wife, Isabella Ramsey (1795-1852). John's married sister, Eliza Mary Armstrong (1788-1854) and at least two brothers, Ralph Willoughby (1783-1852) and Henry (1797-1881) settled in Tecumseth Twp., Simcoe Co., Upper Canada/Ontario. John moved his family a few miles to West Gwillimbury Twp., Simcoe Co. John's gravestone states th

The erenaghy of the medieval Irish [p. 339] church was in essence stewardship of church lands and fullfillment of the duties that went with it. In this respect there was a close similarity of function between the erenagh and coarb, though this latt

Hello group, I am new, so please ignore my ignorance. I have tried to eserarch past messages, but am still in the dark. The family surnames I am trying to get info. on are Presley and Smyths or Smythes. These folks were in Ireland in this area I believe circa 1850's-70's and emigrated to America. some Smyths did return to the area. I'd like to know of some resources in which I might find historical info. about Monaghan--i.e. history of its people, politics, religion, daily life etc. in this s

Sorry to belabor the point, but the following comes to hand and it is instructive: Erenach: (Old Irish airchinnech, head of an ecclesiastical settlement), and office distinguishing the later medieval church among the Gaelic Irish from the system obtaining among the English colonists. Dear List, Anyone researching Church of Ireland McMahon's in Monaghan? Browne's in Monaghan...clones area I recently found as an extracted christening record, Mary Browne christened March 19th, 1826, Clones Monaghan. Daughter of John Browne and Isabella McMahon. Our Mary Browne was born, by various Canadian Census records March 17, 1824-1828. Her father was John Browne and she was somehow related to the McMahon's. So this looks very good. 21. [MON] Robert Montgomery [1]
I have traced my family back to Bartholomew Montgomery who was born in Monaghan in 1821 - his parents are listed as Robert & Mary Ann. I know that Robert was born circa 1770 and that he was a surgeon with the Monaghan Militia and that Bartholomew and 3 older sisters were born in Monaghan. I have not traced the marriage yet (but I do know that Robert died in 1822) but the militia moved around Ireland so the marriage could have taken place elsewhere in Ireland. Does anyone on the list have any information t
22. [MON] Anderson/Short connection [1]
Several researchers and myself have been researching the protestant Short/Shortt family of County Monaghan. For a review of our research go to: http://publish.uwo.ca/~bgordon/ Recently we have connected with another person with some information in a letter, undated but thought to be around the mid 1900s, that a Nancy Short of Drumneil, County Monaghan married an Edward Anderson. When this marriage took place is unknown but thought to be about 1900. The letter, from a person who lived in Drumneil, sugg
23. [MON] Moore / Kettyle / Clones [1]
Hello everyone, I am new to this mailing list and so you will have to excuse my lack of knowledge, I have recently received back from Dublin birth details of my husbands grandmother Margaret Anne Moore. It shows she was born in July 1899 at what looks like Canal Stores or could be Canal House Clone. Her father was Hugh Moore and her mother Sarah Kettyle ?. Is there anyone out there who can tell me if canal stores or house Clones exists and its history. Also is there any census records for about this ti
24. Re: [IRL-MONAGHAN] IRL-MONAGHAN Digest, Vol 3, Issue 124 [1]
Julie, the first thing you should do is order the LDS film for Inishkeen RC parish, 0926053. Peter and Eileen's marriage would probably not be there, as marriages are included only for 1839-1850 and they probably married 1865-1870. However, baptisms are listed for 1837-1880, so the children should all be there. (Baptismal dates may occur before birth dates if there was a delay in registering births, as there often was, and ages in the 1901 census are pretty unreliable.) You could also look for the c
