KENTUCKY'S STORY
3 Survival of a People
Life on the Kentucky Frontier (1750-1820)

Nevertheless, those willing and able to endure the hardships worked hard to convert the wilderness into a Garden of Eden. Land was cheap; timber was plentiful; the woods teemed with game; and life was relatively free from the confining laws and mores of eastern society. Families strove to become self-sufficient, yet freely sha

This is the Linda Cassity Lewis website for Cassity and all derivation spellings.... be careful as much of the information is NOT sourced.... so it's a good starting point but not all accurate....
Linda has done a good job on bringing all the Cassity information to one location and has an excellent paper on the Peter Cassity issue.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE WARS
FRENCH & INDIAN WAR: About 1754, when the French &
Indian War broke out, a new challenge faced Virginia.
She needed more men to serve! Many of the citizens
either ignored or refused this plea by Govenor Din-
widdie as they couldn't see how it involved them. So,
Virignia came up with an "offer they couldn't refuse."
Virginia offered land to its soldiers with the re-
quisite that they served honorably. Sounded better -
even if it did also require ser

KENTUCKY'S STORY
The Need for Statehood
The Road to Statehood (1780-1820)
In the years following the Revolution, Americans poured across the mountains and into the western country. They came down the Ohio River to Limestone (Maysville) and Louisville or overland through the Cumberland Gap, following buffalo trails and Indian pathways to the fertile meadows and hillsides of Kentucky's interior. Many of these settle
BREATHITT CO FEUD: The LITTLE and STRONG families were involved in this
feud and it caused Gov Preston H LESLIE to send sixty members of the
state militia to Jackson on 16 Sept 1874. But, by the time the soldiers
were withdrawn in December of the same year, their numbers had grown to
five separate companies. A local election controversy in Nov 1878
rekindled the hostilities and Gov James B McCREARY had to order the
troops back in. They stayed until Feb of 1878. Another feud here

MORE LAND RECORDS AVAILABLE:
Here are some more sources for old records in Kentucky. The LDS has a
great amount of records - which may or may not be found elsewhere. Here
is a list of some of the records available on microfilm:
1. REGISTERS OF VACANT LANDS (SALES, RECEIPTS) 1795-1806. These are not
indexed. They give the date, number, name, county, amount of
acreage, amount paid.
2. RESIDENT LANDS FORFEITED TO THE STATE 1853-1916 and INDEXES TO
RESIDENT LANDS FORFEIGETED
