Actually, there are early death certificates, but not like we know them now. They were kept in a ledger style format.... having the name of the deceased, death date, cause of death, age/gender, parents names, and death place. They are sporadic, very sporadic, but it is something to at least look through as I found the sister of my Jared ancestor (my 3rd g-grandmother) listed. She wasn't listed in the Breck. Co. cemetery books, so it was a gem of a find and closed a mystery I had for several years. So

Death certificates did not start until 1911 for Kentucky. , so there aren't any before that date. You have to check other records to find that death. Check cemeteries, funeral home, census (Mortality ones), Vital Statistics records sometimes were reported voluntarily before that date.
