5. Mule contests [1]
Pam: Horse and mule pulling contests are very popular. Surely, those events were held back in the "good ol' days." A sled is used in pulling contests, wherein the friction/drag increases as distance pulled increases. The winner is the team of horses/mules, tractor or pick-up truck which pulls the weighted sled the greatest distance in a nearly-straight line. In the olden days, they likely didn't have weighted sleds, but just pulled a heavy object such as a chunk of limestone. I don't know for sure since I
6. Raymond, KY grocery store [1]
Going through my grandmothers pictures I found an old one of a "shack" but labeled "In front of dad's grocery store in Raymond, KY". I wish I had discussed it with her when she was alive or paid better attention as a girl when we visited Raymond, but I only remember the Baptist Church. Does anyone have an idea of where this grocery store was? (owned by John Claycomb) Pam Mix Carroll

8. Re: Store at Raymond, KY [1]
Pam & Larry, My grandparents lived in and ran the store and postoffice at one time. They must have been living there in 1912 because about ten years ago my Uncle Ray Avitt Cashman, Sr. (7 Feb 1912-1 Feb 1998) asked me to take his picture in front of it, which I did. He said that was where he was born. For many years my grandparents Henry Washington Cashman and Lillie Sue Avitt Cashman lived across the road from the store and later Uncle Ray and his wife Wilda Evelyn Biddle Cashman lived there until his

11. Raymond, KY grocery store [1]
Pam: The groc. store that I knew was almost directly across the rd. [Hwy. 477] to the S-SE of the First Baptist Church, Raymond, KY. In the late 1970's - early 1980's, the groc. store was operated by a 1st cousin of my father-in-law. The owner/operator of the store was Thomas 'Taylor' Hall [1915-1995], s/o Junius Austin 'June' Hall & Addie Geraldine Knott. I don't know the yrs. that Taylor Hall bought or closed the store. It was open several times when we went to Raymond for Hall Reunions in Sept. each yr

15. Mule contests [1]
Still going through my grandmother's pix. Several photos of CLAYCOMBs and CHAPPELLs with their mules! I remember as a child my uncle Robert Claycomb was proud of his mules! On tv the other day there was a mule contest or pulling contest, whatever it is called...anyway, Were there such contests in the olden days in the area? Were the mules just working animals or did the owners get to show them off in some contest form? Pam Mix Carroll
