Emily, I thought in your email dated July 26, 2003 you said Sarah 'Sally'
Henson ... now I notice you say Sarah 'Sally' Fugate. Am I missing
something here? I was asking for the parents of John Bowling married Sarah
'Sally' Henson ... was he also married to a Sarah 'Sally' Fugate, or am I
confused? Thanks for any clarification and thanks-a-bunch for sharing.
'R.E.'

I remember my granny making biscuits like this . And her home remedies for
illness too. Coal oil and turpentine mixed, I think, with lard on a rag for
chest colds. Lordy did it stink. Sometimes a toddy with horehound candy
mixed in moonshine for a cough.
And what about the 7th son of a 7th son to blow in the mouth of a babe as a
sure cure for thrush?
My grandpa would treat his huntin dogs for worms with just a tiny bit of
strychnine on the end of his knife. He knew just the proper amount to give

The child of theirs that I most interested in is a Martha Mary Craft. She was

Does anyone have a recipe for Apple Stack Cake, my mom used to make it with dried apples, but she never had a recipe. She learned how to make it from my Dad's Mom, she was a Hensley originally from Clay County. Dad said when they were growing up his Mom made the Stack Cakes at Christmas time and would make extra dough and roll it out and make "cookies" out of it. She would make a pillow sack full (there were 12 kids). I guess that was one of the few sweets they had.I watched Mom make it many times, Dad alwa

Cinda, you are so right. My grandmother, age 23, married Alfred Wilson, age
54, because he was rich. She told me this herself. He died after 12 years
and left her a well-to-do widow in the fine house where I was born. I am
glad grandpa was a rich man otherwise I would not have been born. And it was
all on account that Grandpa was a small man lifting heave weights on a Union
Steamboat on the Mississippi as a Union Soldier during the Civil War as a
result he developed hemorrhoids This enabled him to get a pen
Hi Lorrainne! I have a book that shows Samuel and Sarah's wedding date as
6/19/1856 in Clay county. It says they guess her death around1880 because she
is not on the census of Clay county. But, her children were still there.I
know there's a Hornsby cemetery, I don't know where though. My guess is that
she is buried in Clay county.Samuel was born in Buncombe cty., North
carolina. Maybe he was buried back home ? Just an idea ! Hope this helps

Ok, I didn't care one way or another until now. If you disagree, that's

You really don't know these people personally and to attack them in this way
is truly not right. It is okay to agree to disagree, but don't insult
people. That's what makes this world not filled with Peace.
